In this role, you will manage the full lifecycle from data preparation and modeling through reporting and insight delivery. You'll design data models, build interactive dashboards, and enable self-service analytics across the organization. Success requires strong SQL skills, solid data modeling expertise, and the ability to communicate insights clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

As a Data Analyst you will...

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain analytical datasets and data models used for reporting and dashboards
  • Build, enhance, and support Power BI dashboards, reports, and semantic models (including DAX measures)
  • Write and optimize SQL queries and transformations to prepare data for analysis
  • Partner with stakeholders to translate business questions into requirements and data solutions
  • Ensure data quality, consistency, and reliability across reporting assets
  • Document data definitions, business logic, and technical models to ensure shared understanding and maintainability
  • Identify opportunities to improve data pipelines, performance, and usability
  • Conduct ad hoc analyses to answer time-sensitive business questions and support decision-making
  • Train end-users on dashboard usage and self-service analytics capabilities
  • Support a scalable and maintainable analytics ecosystem

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science or any other related discipline. A degree my be substituted with 4 years of equivalent work experience.
  • 1+ year experience working with structured data and existing analytical datasets.
  • Strong SQL skills for querying, joining, and transforming data in relational databases.
  • Hands-on experience with at least one major BI platform (Power BI, Tableau, or similar).
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to data quality and accuracy.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on Power BI or Tableau experience, including DAX and data modeling.
  • Understanding of data modeling concepts including facts, dimensions, and star schemas.
  • Experience with ETL/ELT processes or analytics pipelines.
  • Experience in Python or R for data analysis and automation.
  • Experience with version control systems or collaborative development workflows.
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms or modern data stacks.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted analytics tools or workflows.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
