Summary:

Manages, plans and coordinates the daily operations of the enterprise coding service to include the following: implementation of and compliance with national, enterprise and HIM department coding policies and procedures for PHS. Develops, documents and oversees training of all enterprise HIM coding staff including ICD-9 and transition to ICD-10. In addition, responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Enterprise Coding to ensure compliance with the Organization s financial goals and policies and procedures as well as compliance with all Federal and State laws and regulatory bodies. Particular focus on coding accuracy, accounts receivable performance and staff productivity. Subject matter expert for coding. Fosters open communications, shares the ideas, concerns and needs of the staff with department leadership. Responsibilities:

Manages, plans and coordinates the daily operations of the enterprise coding service to include the following: implementation of and compliance with national, enterprise and HIM department coding policies and procedures for PHS. Develops, documents and oversees training of all enterprise HIM coding staff including ICD-9 and transition to ICD-10. In addition, responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of Enterprise Coding to ensure compliance with the Organization s financial goals and policies and procedures as well as compliance with all Federal and State laws and regulatory bodies. Particular focus on coding accuracy, accounts receivable performance and staff productivity. Subject matter expert for coding. Fosters open communications, shares the ideas, concerns and needs of the staff with department leadership.

Some key responsibilities include

  • Implement and maintain a standardized, quality data management plan and program to ensure compliance with external regulatory and accreditation requirements, ensure consistency of quality data for the organization s internal data needs and identify, investigate, and prevent violations.
  • Develop and maintain standardized, policies and procedures to monitor the quality and productivity for coding practices, review areas of risk, investigate identified issues, report data analysis, and take appropriate steps to correct violations.
  • Manages distribution of work to ensure equitable assignment and ensures staff productivity meets set departmental and organizational targets.
  • Manages all aspects of staff scheduling in accordance with workload. Troubleshoots problem areas and customer requests as a point of escalation.
  • Perform ongoing quality and productivity monitoring of staff and provide routine feedback to all staff, including counseling and corrective action where appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with coding regulations by training staff in policies and procedures, updating staff on regulatory changes, and holding staff accountable to follow these policies and procedures.
  • Liaison between coding staff and internal and external customers or stakeholders (e.g., Business Office, Admitting, Quality Department, PMG Leadership, Providers, and Vendors).
  • Perform all staff performance evaluations within established timeframes.
  • Ensures technology is used appropriately and optimally. Envision future technology needs for the coding unit.
  • Provide and maintain communication, leadership and management of staff to ensure the team is in alignment with organizational vision, values and strategies.

Qualifications:

  • High School graduate (G.E.D) is required. Associates degree or 2-3 years post-secondary education required, but experience in lieu of education may be substituted in accordance with organizational practice.
  • Must have one of the following coding certifications at time of hire: CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H.
  • Requires a minimum of five years experience in healthcare CPT-4, ICD-9 and HCPCS coding in a hospital or provider based setting preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Detailed and results oriented.
  • Ability to work independently and make independent decisions.
  • Medical terminology and anatomy and physiology knowledge required
