About the team

OpenAI didn't begin as a traditional company. It began as an idea: that artificial intelligence could be developed in a way that benefits everyone. As a creative team, our role is to help make sure the work behind that idea is understood, as it leaves the lab and meets the world.

This company works at the frontier of intelligence. Like any frontier, it's unfinished, constantly shifting, and still being explored. Our job is to stay close to that uncertainty and help shape how this story gets told in a way that feels grounded and human. We do this through campaigns, launches, films, brand systems, and work that doesn't fit neatly into any of those categories yet. This team is for people who want to help shape something from the beginning.

About the role

We're looking for a Creative Director, Launches to lead the creative thinking behind major product and company moments - shaping launch narratives that are clear, compelling, and culturally resonant across audiences.

You'll help define the voice of OpenAI at a moment when the story is still being written. You'll concept and craft storytelling across launches, campaigns, and cultural moments, partnering closely with Product Marketing, Comms, Product, and our in-house creative teams from the start.

To us, creativity is a team sport. Ideas get better when you talk them through and build on each other's thinking. We value curiosity over certainty, kindness over ego, and craft over shortcuts. If you value those same things and care deeply about craft, you'll fit in here.

This is a concept-first role focused on developing the core idea, messaging architecture, and narrative direction that makes launches feel cohesive - whether the audience is developers, enterprise decision-makers, everyday users, creators, or policymakers.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and shape storytelling across launches and campaigns: Own narrative direction for key initiatives and creative workstreams, from early strategy through final execution.

  • Lead launch narratives end-to-end: Translate product strategy into a big idea, launch story, and messaging framework that works across multiple audiences and channels.

  • Translate products into human-centered narratives: Turn OpenAI's products and real-world use cases into emotionally resonant, clear, accurate storytelling.

  • Develop campaign concepts and story arcs: Create messaging frameworks, creative territories, and story arcs that align with brand strategy and ladder to a cohesive launch system.

  • Partner deeply with creative teams: Collaborate closely with design, motion, production, social, and agency partners to bring ideas to life across films, web, social, presentations, scripts, and supporting materials.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure consistency and impact: Work with Product, Comms, Marketing, Research, and Legal/Policy to align narrative, claims, and approvals while maintaining momentum.

  • Build clarity in ambiguity: Lead through shifting inputs and tight timelines with calm decision-making, strong structure, and crisp prioritization.

  • Evolve and steward OpenAI's voice and tone: Protect craft, refine language, and ensure voice and tone are consistent across channels and audiences.

  • Raise the creative standard: Give sharp feedback, elevate craft across concept and execution, and champion clarity, precision, and accessibility.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 12+ years of experience leading creative storytelling for launches, campaigns, or brand initiatives across platforms (in-house, agency, studio, or brand environments).

  • Are a senior-level creative leader with experience owning narrative strategy and driving work forward autonomously in fast-paced environments.

  • Have deep fluency in product storytelling and real-world use cases - and can translate complexity into language that is clear, accurate, and human.

  • Are a strong conceptual thinker with exceptional craft - with an excellent sense of voice, tone, rhythm, and structure.

  • Can build a messaging architecture that works across multiple audiences (developers, enterprise, everyday users, policymakers) without diluting the core idea.

  • Have a proven ability to collaborate cross-functionally and navigate approvals while balancing creative ambition with clarity, precision, and accessibility.

  • Have strong project ownership and organizational instincts - able to manage multiple complex workstreams with confidence.

  • Care about the ethical and cultural implications of how AI is explained and positioned in the world.
