ELECTRICIAN, MEDIUM VOLTAGE (STARSHIP) As a Medium Voltage Electrician, you will support the installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment in substations and power grid facilities to ensure safe, reliable power delivery. This role focuses on basic tasks under direct supervision, working with energized equipment up to 260 volts initially, progressing to higher voltages (above 750 volts) after training. You will assist higher-classified personnel in high- and medium-voltage environments, following strict safety standards. This position combines core responsibilities from substation technician and station electrician roles, emphasizing hands-on learning and team collaboration.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in installing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing substation equipment, including breakers, transformers, switches, relays, buswork, control systems, and batteries.
- Perform basic routine maintenance on high- and medium-voltage electrical systems, such as cleaning, lubrication, and visual inspections (e.g., checking oil levels, lights, heaters, and connections).
- Conduct entry-level electrical testing, including using voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters, insulation meggers, and assisting with insulation resistance, relay, transformer, and circuit breaker tests.
- Read and interpret basic electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and work orders with guidance.
- Troubleshoot simple electrical, mechanical, and control system issues under supervision.
- Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding, clearance procedures, and safety protocols (e.g., PPE, emergency rescue techniques like steel/aerial lift rescue).
- Assist in station switching, de-energizing equipment, placing grounds, and coordinating with operators, engineers, and utility crews during outages or Operations.
- Help with physical tasks: digging/backfilling trenches, installing conduit/pipe/cable/wire, uncrating materials, painting structures, climbing ladders/structures (up to 50+ ft), and operating hand/power tools, portable generators, blowers, and pumps.
- Support emergency responses to outages, faults, and call-outs for prompt service restoration.
- Document work performed, test results, and observations accurately; maintain records and prepare basic reports.
- Replace simple components like lamps, switches, outlets, dry cells; assist with oil sampling/handling and signal/communication systems.
- Participate in training sessions, assist in training others, and become familiar with company safety rules, First Aid.
- Operate company vehicles and specialized equipment; inspect and store personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform similar or less skilled incidental duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- 3+ years of experience working as a licensed electrician.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate degree in electrical, mechanical, industrial maintenance technology.
- Basic understanding of electrical principles (AC/DC circuits, safety standards).
- Ability to read basic prints/drawings and use common test tools.
- Proficiency with hand/power tools and physical tasks (lifting 50+ lbs, working at heights/confined spaces, outdoors in all weather).
- Strong safety focus, attention to detail, and ability to work independently or in teams.
- Knowledge of print reading for drawings, manuals, and one-lines.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Schedule varies depending on site operational needs and flexibility required regarding frequent overtime/weekend support
- Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small opening and climbing hand over hand, lifting up to 25 lbs., and working on ladders/lifts at elevated heights
- Ability to work in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
- Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment

- Candidate must be capable of safely working at heights (up to 500ft), in confined spaces, working with high voltage, and performing the physical requirements of the job listed in the job description.
