What to Expect

Tesla is seeking a politically astute advocate to spearhead the legislative agenda for the next generation of the electric grid. In this hybrid role, approximately half of the time will be dedicated to California, serving as a key strategist to advance policies and bills supporting battery energy storage, solar, and virtual power plants (VPPs). The remaining time will focus on high-priority states across the U.S., managing campaigns to promote Tesla's energy products. This position prioritizes legislative and political influence, with a primary focus on shaping state-level policy outcomes and supporting Tesla's commercial and residential energy business, while also collaborating with regulatory teams and addressing barriers to commercial deployment in priority jurisdictions as needed.

What You'll Do
  • Lead legislative engagement strategy, collaborating with Tesla's business units to assess impacts on energy policy, operations, and technology development, while creating proactive strategies to open new market opportunities for energy product deployment
  • Provide California-specific expertise by maintaining strong relationships in Sacramento and driving state-focused policy initiatives
  • Draft and advocate for innovative legislation to highlight the value of battery energy storage and distributed energy resources (DERs), expedite deployment timelines, and enhance electric grid utilization, while monitoring and countering opposing legislation and developing a adaptable "legislative toolkit" of pro-storage bill language for multiple states
  • Build and strengthen relationships with policymakers, utility partners, and trade associations, representing Tesla through written and verbal comments at state agencies and public hearings
  • Respond to the needs of Tesla leadership and internal business units, assisting in resolving issues related to market expansion and entry
  • Monitor legislative trends and political developments to inform Tesla's strategic positioning in key markets
  • Support cross-functional teams by providing political insights and guidance on energy policy challenges

What You'll Bring
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in government affairs, lobbying, or legislative staff roles, with preferred experience in energy policy or electric utilities
  • Degree in Political Science, Energy, Economics, Utility Business Models, or equivalent experience
  • Proven track record of influencing state-level policymaking processes, including stakeholder engagement, drafting comments, and providing verbal testimony, with preferred experience working with public utility commissions and utility programs
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex and technical policy points effectively to diverse audiences
  • Results-oriented and self-motivated, with the ability to travel and operate independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Deep understanding of legislative processes and political dynamics at the state level
  • Ability to build coalitions and navigate complex political landscapes to achieve policy objectives
