What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Equipment Engineering & Controls Manager to build, develop, and manage a team of equipment engineers, controls engineers, test engineers, and technicians responsible for supporting production of our Optimus Bot. The team will be directly responsible for the performance and continuous improvement of equipment on the production line to drive improvements in safety, ergonomics, overall equipment efficiency, product yield, cost and cycle time through documented actions with clearly defined schedules and expected results. The Manager will lead by example and work closely with the engineers on the floor to solve problems as needed. They will provide technical guidance and explore new technologies to solve challenging problems with automation.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of building new teams and leading complex, large-scale production operations. They will work closely with department leaders to align operating strategies, KPIs, and project priorities to meet department goals. This is a cross-functional role that requires coordination between many different teams within Tesla.
What You'll Do
- Build, Manage, mentor and lead a team of equipment & controls engineers supporting Optimus production lines and subassemblies
- Build & improve management systems to ensure all equipment operates safely, with high availability, product quality and within established cycle time
- Own, report on and drive improvement of area KPI's including equipment availability, product yield, cycle time and cost
- Coach engineers and technicians to develop and implement equipment upgrades to increase capacity, lower cost per unit, and improve yield
- Lead and assist engineers in technical troubleshooting of equipment, including debugging PLC's, reviewing code, reading electrical schematics, and other hands-on testing to resolve unplanned down events and driving permanent RCCAs
- Make daily resource allocation decisions, balancing competing priorities, to serve the needs of the engineering, maintenance and production communities
- Serve as backup engineer for all members of the team to ensure zero gaps in coverage as well as adequately address issues of escalating complexity
- Collaborate with MFG engineering and controls teams to install and debug new equipment
- Create hiring plans to build a growing team and support individual growth and performance
- Execute strategies with production to flawlessly execute planned downtime, manage change control compliance, and validate effectiveness of machine upgrades
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Electrical, Industrial, Equipment Engineering, or equivalent experience; focus on automation is required (Ignition, Beckhoff, Rockwell, Fanuc)
- Exemplary track record of high impact contributions both as an individual contributor and in a management capacity. Minimum 7 years of manufacturing experience required, with at least 2 years managing an engineering team
- Demonstrated experience leading discussions and resolving conflicts
- Ability to collaborate with all levels of engineering
- Demonstrated experience developing and driving a continuous OEE improvement roadmap and presenting the strategy to senior leadership
- Experience with automation and controls engineering, including PLC, is preferred
- Strong technical background in mechanical and electrical fundamentals
- Familiar with material joining techniques including fastening, welding, soldering, adhesive bonding
- Experience with data analysis and basic statistics a plus
- Experience with failure analysis and/or problem solving methodologies (such as 4D, fishbone, and 5 whys)

Expected Compensation
$140,800 - $258,000/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
