The Role

QuidelOrtho is looking for a Operational Excellence, QIC Internthat wants to spend their summer working towards our mission: Changing Lives, One Test at a Time. Interns will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop their skills all while contributing to key company projects and initiatives. Our team will help students apply their educational background and broaden their knowledge base within their role and learn more about working in the medical device/biotech industry. Interns will work with a mentor(s) on a guided and impactful project and will be able to collaborate with and be part of a supportive and dedicated team.

This Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) paid program for 10-12 weeks.

Session 1: June 15th through August 31st

Session 2: July 6th through September 31st

The Operational Excellence intern will support the Operational Excellence team by assisting in the standardization, documentation and maintenance of current processes, conducting process observations, and developing reports that enable data-driven improvement.

This position is onsite in Rochester, NY.

The Responsibilities
  • Support the Operational Excellence | QIC team in documenting and standardizing current-state processes across operational areas.

  • Conduct process observations (gemba walks) to understand workflows, identify inefficiencies, and capture opportunities for improvement.

  • Improve and Maintain team's Share Site Tasks/Responsibilities.

  • Assist in collecting, organizing, and analyzing operational data to support performance reporting and data-driven decision making.

  • Develop and maintain process documentation, visual standards, and work instructions to promote consistency and knowledge retention.

  • Support the creation, formatting, and ongoing maintenance of training and onboarding materials aligned with standardized processes.

  • Prepare reports, dashboards, and presentations summarizing findings, trends, improvement opportunities.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather input, validate process understanding, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Contribute ideas for process improvements based on observations, data analysis, and Operational Excellence principles.

Job Deliverables
  • 2-3 Current & Future VSM

  • 3-5 Process Observation & Improvement Summaries

  • The intern will present a PowerPoint presentation on his/her work to a cross-functional group

The Individual

Required:

  • Field of Study: Industrial, Process, Systems, Manufacturing, or Data Engineering; Data Analytics; or a related technical field supporting process optimization, analytics, & continuous improvement.

  • Must be at least 18 years old Must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor's or Master's program in the Fall Semester 2025 at an accredited university or college.

  • Student must start on June 15th or July 6th and Must be able to complete a consecutive 10-12 week internship.

  • Must have work authorization in the United States at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

  • Minimum GPA: 3.0

  • Minimum Year in School : Rising Junior or Senior

  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and engage with operational personnel.

Preferred:

  • Coursework or project experience involving process analysis, data analytics, systems optimization.

  • Experience working with data visualization or analytics tools (e.g., Power B, Tableau, Python, or similar tools).

  • Familiarity with process mapping, workflow documentation, or improvement methodologies.

  • Experience working in operations, healthcare, or technical environment Demonstrated initiative through academic projects, leadership roles, or extracurricular activities.

The Work Environment

The work environment characteristics are representative of a manufacturing, laboratory, or warehouse environment and include handling of viral and bacterial hazards, potentially hazardous chemicals, as well as infectious or potentially infectious bodily fluids, tissues, and samples. Up to 75% of the time you will be, standing, walking or sitting for extended periods of time. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Flexible work hours to meet project deadlines.

Salary Transparency

The salary range for this position takes into account a wide range of factors including education, experience, knowledge, skills, geography, and abilities of the candidate, in addition to internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary range for current Freshman, rising Sophomore is 18.00/hour; Sophomore, rising Junior is 20/hour; Junior, rising senior is $23.00/hour to $26.00/hour; Senior, enrolled in school for fall 2024 is 25.00/hour to 28.00/hour; or currently enrolled Graduate, MBD, PhD program is 28.00/hour to 30.00/hour. At QuidelOrtho, compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
