POSITION SUMMARY

The Membership Engagement Manager plays a strategic role in developing long-term relationships with members throughout their lifespan. Reporting to the Associate Director, Member Engagement and working closely with the other Manager of Member Engagement, this role is responsible for setting and executing a comprehensive membership growth and engagement strategy various cohorts, with accountability for acquisition, retention, engagement outcomes, and associated dues revenue.

This position operates with a high degree of autonomy and cross-functional influence, partnering closely with Marketing, Education, District Branches, and external vendors to design, implement, and optimize programs, communications, and benefits that address the evolving needs of members. The Manager translates data, market insights, and member feedback into actionable strategies that strengthen the membership pipeline.



DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES



Membership Engagement and Communication:



  • Develop and implement targeted recruitment, engagement and retention strategies for U.S., Canadian and international medical students, residents and general members and will contribute to annual membership goals, including revenue of approximately $9 million. Own and advance the member journeys for targeted segments.
  • Manage marketing initiatives and promotional activities to support this segment to include copywriting, collaborating with marketing on campaign design and execution.
  • Oversee omni-channel marketing initiatives across APA platforms, including email, print, social media, digital advertising, SMS, and telemarketing, coordinating with internal teams and external agencies as needed. Identify and manage opportunities to identify and enhance member benefits; coordinate inter- and intra-departmentally and with external partners on the development and marketing of resources.
  • Use data and analytics to assess the effectiveness of engagement and marketing initiatives, including email, social, and digital campaigns; interpret trends; and recommend evidence-based improvements.
  • Plan and coordinate formal and informal market research initiatives to gather insights into member needs, preferences, and satisfaction within cohorts.
  • Ensure member-facing resources remain current and effective by regularly reviewing and coordinating updates to training-related content on the District Branch Resources section of the APA website.
  • Regularly review and coordinate with Marketing to update the membership resources located on the District Branch Resources section of the APA website.
  • Create and execute strategies for member retention by identifying target audiences, creating marketing materials, ongoing A/B testing and tracking efforts and conducting and tracking outreach efforts.


  • Provide strategic oversight of APA's presence at internal and external conferences relevant to medical students and RFMs, ensuring alignment with recruitment and engagement objectives.



Program Management



  • Oversee the annual planning and execution of Resident-Fellow programs, with emphasis on the 100% Club Program: support program coordinators and training directors; increase participation among the 400+ residency programs located in the U.S. and Canada; expand the number of programs participating in group invoicing; develop and communicate new benefits with participating and non-participating residency programs and members; collaborate with program directors on ensuring a relevant supplemental training curriculum by program year.


  • Provide support to ad-hoc work groups of the Membership Committee and District Branch Executives as needed.
  • Manage the relationship between APA and PsychSIGN, APA's medical student member group, by ensuring timely delivery of relevant information, with student interests in psychiatry, as well as act as the liaison for expense and revenue budget and programmatic needs.
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to one or more components, including participation in one evening call per month, ongoing coordination with elected leaders, and providing support for Action Papers.
  • Serve as the liaison on assigned Communities.
  • Manage the process for related micro volunteer opportunities.
  • Support APA's affinity programs, including, but not limited to, malpractice insurance and management of external partners, including tracking product utilization, with a revenue budget of more than $1M.
  • Manage postings and submissions of Residency-and Fellowship-related vacancies in Job Central.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to the membership development function.

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS



  • BA/BS preferred with at least 5 years of relevant experience.


  • Five years of experience in marketing, membership, communications, product management/development, with a professional or trade association
  • Experience using multiple communication platforms in a professional setting, such as CRM software (SalesForce specifically), online communities, email marketing systems, and/or Adobe Creative suite.
  • Experience with Higher Logic or other community platforms a plus.
  • Experience with Google Analytics a plus
  • Proficient in Windows and Microsoft Office
  • Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to work autonomously.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, attention to detail, and a creative mind


  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to coordinate work with other staff members to determine priorities and meet established deadlines.


  • Service oriented with an ability to interact in a diplomatic and tactful way with members, public, and other staff.


  • Ability to learn and utilize new software applications as required.
