Senior Systems Engineer

LOCATION: US-AL-Montgomery / Maxwell-Gunter AFB

Astrion has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Systems Engineer supporting the Integrated Maintenance Data System Central Database (IMDS CDB). This is an Air Force enterprise-level automated maintenance management information system for weapon systems. IMDS CDB supports wartime readiness and operational maintenance activities for aircraft, trainers, simulators, communications-electronics, and support equipment across worldwide operating bases, including Active Duty Air Force, Air National Guard (ANG), Air Force Reserve (AFRC), and Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF). The Senior Systems Engineer will provide advanced technical expertise and leadership in support of IMDS CDB and related Air Force programs. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of Agile systems engineering principles, DoD acquisition processes, and the ability to independently perform complex tasks while mentoring junior personnel.

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • Education & Experience:
    • Master's or Doctorate in a related field with 10 years of experience, including 5 years in DoD; OR
    • Bachelor's degree in a related field with 12 years of experience, including 5 years in DoD; OR
    • 15 years of directly related experience with proper certifications, including 8 years in DoD.
  • Advanced knowledge of systems engineering principles, standards, and practices.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and digital engineering practices.
  • Strong understanding of DoD acquisition processes and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to perform tasks independently and lead technical teams.

Preferred:

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., INCOSE CSEP, DoD DAWIA certifications).
  • Experience with Air Force maintenance systems or similar enterprise-level systems.

Responsibilities

  • Apply Agile systems engineering principles to acquisition, development, integration, sustainment, and deployment of IT/software systems.
  • Identify and implement emerging IT acquisition strategies, best practices, and performance measures.
  • Conduct program reviews to evaluate alternative plans, design/test results, and ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Prepare technical documentation defining system/subsystem characteristics and recommendations.
  • Develop and deliver management reports and technical presentations for planning and corrective actions.
  • Validate software systems through analysis, evaluation criteria development, and recommendations.
  • Provide engineering support for risk management activities in compliance with AF Systems Engineering Assessment Model (SEAM).
  • Ensure all engineering activities comply with DoD, AF, and AFMC directives, and related guidance.
  • Mentor and oversee junior and journeyman engineers within the technical discipline.
