Job Description

The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) seeks a dynamic Laboratory Safety Professional for the MURR Health & Safety team to grow and develop a strong laboratory safety culture. This position will help our safety team meet its mission to protect the health and safety of our coworkers and the public while maintaining a versatile yet conservative approach. The successful candidate will take an innovative and proactive approach to safety and pay sharp attention to detail. Position Summary

The Laboratory Safety Professional will report to the Senior Manager - Health and Safety to ensure that research and production operations are conducted safely and efficiently. This will include compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as university policies. The position will work closely with MURR staff and a newly formed Health & Safety team to ensure all environmental health and safety needs are addressed.

This position will:

  • Provide technical guidance regarding facilities, work practices, and equipment for the protection of personnel, laboratories, and the environment from laboratory hazards in accordance with applicable university policies and state and federal laws.
  • Focus on safe use, storage, and disposal of chemicals.
  • Perform a variety of functions throughout the facility in support of research, education, and laboratory operations.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Oversee and assist laboratory staff with storage, handling, inventory, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and biological materials.
  • Interact with laboratories on environmental compliance matters.
  • Lead the development of new techniques for hazardous waste management.
  • Evaluate needs for safety equipment in laboratories as well as schedule equipment calibration/service, including eyewash and safety showers. Complete monthly work orders pertaining to health and safety.
  • Review and provide input on updates to policies, procedures, and training specific to laboratory safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Work with laboratory staff to keep up-to-date laboratory worker rosters within Campus Environmental Health and Safety Assistant (EHSA).
  • Ensure the lab responsible list and hazard communication door signs are updated as needed.
  • Establish and oversee a facility-wide chemical inventory.
  • Oversee personal protective equipment (PPE) enforcement and purchase, while also documenting all laboratory injury reports.

This position will require on-site work.

Shift

Monday - Friday, 8AM to 5PM. Some planned variance in schedule may be required, details will be discussed during interview.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

* At least 5 years of experience in a laboratory/University Environmental Health & Safety setting.
* General awareness and knowledge of hazardous materials challenges for laboratory safety in higher education.
* Strong attention to detail.
* Proficiency in business writing, utilization of spreadsheet software.
* Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
* Ability to multitask, prioritize, and perform numerous duties on a deadline.
* Understands key functional drivers and uses this understanding to accomplish/complete Laboratory Safety projects/initiatives.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year

Grade: GGS M10
