Our Savannah, GA office is actively searching for a Marine / Structural Engineer with 5 to 10 years of hands-on experience in the design and analysis of complex structural systems. Experience in waterfront, marine, port, heavy civil, industrial, or other large-scale structural design is strongly preferred. As the successful new hire, you will have a strong background in structural engineering fundamentals, demonstrated experience delivering complex structural projects, and a commitment to producing high-quality, practical design solutions. Experience in marine and waterfront infrastructure is highly desirable.

The majority of this role will focus on delivering large, highly complex port development projects for the Georgia Ports Authority, the fastest growing container port in the United States. In addition to supporting GPA, you will have opportunities to collaborate with other Moffatt & Nichol offices and contribute to port, waterfront, and infrastructure projects across the country and around the world, serving a diverse range of industries and clients.

This role includes mentoring and providing technical direction to junior engineers, contributing to design reviews, and helping maintain the high standards of quality and collaboration that define our team. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Leads and delivers multiple concurrent structural design assignments in a dynamic, fast-paced project environment, maintaining accountability for technical quality, budget, and schedule performance
  • Serves as Structural Task Lead on complex waterfront, marine, and heavy infrastructure projects, independently performing and overseeing structural analysis and design for piers, wharves, bulkheads, pile-supported structures, and other facilities
  • Performs and oversees seismic analysis using appropriate industry methodologies, exercising independent engineering judgment in developing modeling assumptions and design approaches
  • Applies concrete, steel, timber, and composite materials across a range of structural systems, selecting appropriate systems and detailing approaches to meet project requirements
  • Prepares and oversees development of engineering calculations, plans, specifications, and technical memoranda suitable for client and regulatory review
  • Ensures structural designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements; participates in internal quality assurance and peer review processes
  • Provides technical leadership to junior engineers and EITs, including task delegation, design oversight, mentorship, and knowledge sharing
  • Collaborates with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to resolve complex design challenges
  • Conducts site visits and inspections to evaluate existing conditions and develop practical, technically sound recommendations
  • Leads or supports construction phase services including review of shop drawings, RFIs, and submittals, and provide technical guidance during construction
  • Performs construction site inspections and prepares inspection reports

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering required
  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering strongly preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Licensure in the State of Georgia required within 6 months of hire
  • 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in structural engineering with demonstrated responsibility for delivering structural design packages
    • Experience in waterfront / marine infrastructure strongly preferred
    • Candidates with experience in heavy civil, industrial, energy, or other large infrastructure structures will also be considered
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as task lead or independently manage discrete scopes of work, including coordination with multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards (e.g., API, AISC, ACI) and demonstrated ability to apply them in complex design scenarios
  • Background in structural modeling with nonlinear elements and/or soil-structure interaction preferred
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software such as SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, or similar
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare technical memoranda and coordinate effectively with clients and internal teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to contribute positively to a collaborative, team-oriented environment
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post-offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Majority of work is office based. Some site visits may be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment. Some travel to other offices and project sites, including occasional overnight trips, may be required.
