Position Summary

Organization: City of Rio Rancho

Location: City Hall, 3200 Civic Center Circle NE, Rio Rancho, NM

An Off-Campus Work-Study position - MUST have a Work-Study Award

The Planning Intern is responsible for aiding staff within the Planning and Zoning Division of the Department of Development Services. Must have a desire to assist with community meetings. Planning, zoning and community outreach skills are strongly desired. Working knowledge and experience in computer mapping, data interpretation and analysis and basic land use knowledge. Duties anticipated include reviewing current municipal codes and updating sections of the code as directed, project meeting attendance, assisting with legal notices, field data gathering, and assisting with community meetings as needed. The successful candidate will work well with others, be team oriented, helpful and a good problem solver.

Hours: Flexible between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; can schedule around classes.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a Community and Regional Planning degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
A basic understanding of zoning codes, long range land use plans and community outreach practices;
Must be able to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Skills in reading and interpreting land use plans or reports, methods and procedures.
Research, read, interpret, and work from field notes, plans, specifications, and similar data.
This position works with planning and zoning staff on various assignments on an as needed basis. This position must maintain harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment.
