Position Summary
The Compensation & Classification Consultant provides compensation and classification services within University Human Resources, serving as a knowledgeable and responsive resource to the university community. In partnership with compensation and classification analysts and under the direction of the Assistant Director, this role promotes clear communication, consistent practices, and effective collaboration across job review, evaluation, and implementation processes. The consultant also advises HR partners and leaders on compensation and classification policies, ensuring consistent interpretation and application across the institution.
The consultant serves as a key liaison to distributed units-gathering feedback from HR partners, contributing to the development of training and communication resources, and ensuring partners have the tools and guidance needed to navigate compensation, classification, and related policy processes with clarity and confidence.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Knowledge of foundational HR principles and practices, particularly related to compensation and classification concepts, terminology, and processes.
  • General understanding of higher education organizational structures and how HR services are delivered in a complex institutional environment.
  • Familiarity with HR information systems and the role technology plays in supporting compensation and classification workflows.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to adapt style and approach to diverse audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, track workflows, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to gather, synthesize, and communicate stakeholder feedback to inform practical solutions and support continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while managing individual responsibilities with initiative and minimal supervision.
  • Ability to approach sensitive or complex situations with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.

Position Request Review & Process Coordination

  • Serve as a functional point of contact for incoming compensation and classification questions and requests, applying subject matter knowledge to assess, triage, and prioritize submissions for analyst review.
  • Conduct preliminary reviews to ensure submissions are complete, accurate, and accompanied by all required documentation prior to assignment to an analyst.
  • Communicate professionally with departmental contacts to resolve outstanding items
  • Provide guidance on submission requirements.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director and Director, help ensure requests are positioned for timely and efficient review.
  • Ensure workflow integrity and a positive stakeholder experience.

  • Provide consultation and guidance to HR campus partners regarding policies, processes, and procedures related to compensation and classification.
  • Coordinate more complex cases with analysts, the Assistant Director, and HR campus partners to identify the best path forward.
  • Interpret and apply compensation and classification policies to varied and complex situations, guiding HR partners on appropriate courses of action

  • Analyze operational observations and translate findings into actionable recommendations presented to the Assistant Director & Director to drive ongoing process improvement.
