Qualifications

Overview

Under direction, is responsible for clinical nursing specialty duties of considerable difficulty; and performs related work as required. An employee in this class functions as a clinical nurse practitioner in a medical specialty area, providing assessment, diagnosis, consultations, and medical treatment for assigned hospitalized patients. This particular position is structured for a nurse practitioner certified in Family Medicine (FNP-BC) or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care/Emergency Medicine (AGACNP-BC / ENP-BC), as the primary focus is on the medical management of patients within the psychiatric hospital setting, including medical care and coordination of acute and chronic medical issues rather than psychiatric evaluations or primary psychiatric medication management. The ideal candidate would demonstrate competence in analyzing and interpreting patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses and therapeutic interventions. This class differs from Registered Nurse Expand Skills in that an incumbent of the latter does not meet the qualifications to write and sign prescriptions or issue non-controlled legend drugs.

Responsibilities

1. Monitors patient's health status, efficacy of care, and response to treatments to ensure patient progress and the best possible outcome for the patient. Devises evidence-based treatment strategies to meet the needs of patients with difficult diagnoses.
2. Prescribes medication dosages and frequencies based on patients' characteristics, detects and responds to adverse drug reactions, responds to medical emergencies, performs basic life support and CPR, provides psychosocial counseling, provides preventative health care, and provides care according to patient needs.
3. Analyzes findings form physical examination, laboratory reports, and other diagnostic testing. Reviews patient history from medical records, orders appropriate diagnostic tests, and obtains information form patients or others to determine the reason of hospitalization, office visit, or chief compliant.
4. Safeguards medical records in accordance with agency directives and state and federal law.
5. Audits patient charts for protocol, standards of care, and compliance with agency and outside accrediting/licensing organization's guidelines.
6. Collaborates with consulting physician about patient's plan of care.
7. Participates in orientation for new staff, delivers health related training, and acts as a preceptor to students in medical, nursing, pharmacy, or nurse practitioner programs.
8. Leads patient treatment teams as necessary to coordinate patient care.
