Job Summary

Employment Duration: 6 months (with potential for extension)

The Project Manager supports analytical studies on a variety of policies, projects, programs, and issues in support of a research initiative and organizational unit. This role assists in policy and program planning, development, administration, management, and implementation. The incumbent interprets, monitors, and analyzes information regarding policies and procedures and provides consultative services to department administrators and other stakeholders.

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of analytical practices, policies, and procedures to research, analyze, and develop solutions to a wide range of issues. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Primarily works on policies, programs, and proposals that are complex in nature and diverse in scope. Develops new programs, policies, or procedures for possible implementation.

The UCSF Center for Translational and Policy Research on Personalized Medicine (TRANSPERS) is recruiting a Project Manager. Duties involve project management and research support. Research projects focus on translational science, biotechnology, and personalized medicine, including health care targeting medical interventions to patients based on their genetics and its impact on clinical care and health policy.

The successful candidate will work on policy-relevant research projects with a team of researchers. The role includes administrative and research support responsibilities. The position is grant-supported and requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Work hours are flexible with telecommuting arrangements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide analyses for complex budget, financial, academic, data, systems, and resource projects working with managers at all levels.
  • Research, monitor, and analyze regulations, legislation, research literature, and UC policies for organizational impact.
  • Research and analyze processes and procedures; summarize findings, policies, and organizational structures to develop and/or implement changes and provide consultative services.
  • Coordinate implementation with cross-organizational departments or external entities as needed.
  • Research and draft complex proposals, reports, briefings, executive summaries, and speeches; establish and maintain internal and external contacts for data collection and exchange.
  • Develop scope of work, budgets, and reports for project requirements.
  • Plan and implement project-related administrative activities, including scheduling and agenda planning for phone, web, and in-person meetings.
  • Manage project deadlines and grants.
  • Provide research support by assisting in managing research activities with the Principal Investigator and collaborators; develop research materials and dissemination products such as websites and newsletters; conduct literature reviews and summarize key findings.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training.
  • At least one year of experience in research administration in a research-intensive environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching, and synthesizing large amounts of data to prepare sound and relevant proposals and analyses.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Proven team and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize multiple work assignments, meet strict deadlines, and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Experience planning and implementing meetings (phone, web, and in-person), including scheduling and agenda setting.
  • Knowledge of research grants and research management.
  • Experience developing project timelines and task lists.
  • Experience managing research project deliverables.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training.
  • Experience or interest in health policy, including the topics and research methods used by TRANSPERS.
  • Experience managing research projects at a UC campus.
  • Experience conducting literature reviews, synthesizing information and data, and drafting research and policy manuscripts.
