Job Summary

The Manager provides strategic and operational oversight for the Business Intelligence Developer Team, directing a portfolio of work that spans complex, enterprise-wide initiatives with significant impact across the medical center as well as routine reporting and data extraction requests. The role is accountable for aligning team priorities, resources, and deliverables with organizational strategic goals and operational needs. The Manager oversees the APeX Reporting function, ensuring the delivery of accurate, timely, and actionable operational reporting focused on healthcare, financial, and administrative data within the EMR environment. This position establishes standards, governance, and performance expectations to support high-quality analytics and informed decision-making. Serving as a senior subject matter expert in EpicCare clinical applications-including Inpatient, Ambulatory, ASAP, Willow OpTime, Radiant, Anesthesia, and SlicerDicer-the Manager provides leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to the team.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $168,200 - $240,000 (Annual Rate).

Enterprise Information and Analytics (EIA) advances UCSF's institutional priorities by enhancing access to and the use of data and analytics, including appropriate data platforms and data governance, in a manner that meets the unique needs across the education, research, and care mission areas.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • Advanced degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience leading large groups or teams
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience
  • Certifications:
    • Cogito Fundamentals
    • Epic Clarity Data Model
    • Cogito Tools Administration
  • Expert knowledge of clinical informatics operations, including controlled terminology, clinical workflows, user interface optimization, clinical decision support, rules development, data integration and mining, clinical ontologies, and adoption of technology.
  • Demonstrated expertise in all relevant clinical informatics software and systems, and of the most complex concepts, principles, policies, methodologies, techniques, best practices, regulations, and standards involved with patient care and electronic medical data management in the UC health care system
  • Critical thinking, persuasion/negotiation, mentoring, leadership/management, problem solving, and human resource policies and procedures relating to management responsibilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication.
  • Quantitative and analytical abilities.
  • Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, to include the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software.
  • Ability to understand the process involved to adapt, integrate, and modify existing programs or vendor-supplied products for use within the technical environment.
  • Experienced in leading change management activities and managing their impact across the unit or department.
  • Highly developed skills and expertise in project management, with demonstrated ability to plan and lead teams, prioritize tasks, and direct projects successfully from inception to completion on task and on schedule.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to individuals and groups with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication.
  • Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to monitor, evaluate, and document personnel matters and performance, and contribute to decision-making on personnel actions.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as an expert resource with broad industry knowledge, to lead teams and work effectively with key personnel and management, and to provide advice and counsel on optimal strategies and policies for improving quality, efficiency, and functionality of clinical informatics programs.
  • Expert proficiency in interpersonal communications to convey highly technical information and instructions, develop and deliver training materials as needed, and collaborate productively with business and technical staff, clinical users, management, and key stakeholders at all professional and technical levels
