Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Associate Chief Nurse Officer (ACNO), the PCD supervises Unit Directors and teams within Pediatric Acute Care & Support Services. The PCD works closely with Nursing colleagues, appropriate Department Chairs, Medical Directors, and medical staff for the services assigned. Core departmental oversight of several pediatric departments, such as: Hematology/Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, Med/Surg, Transitional Care and Intensive Care Nursery, Other key contacts include Child Life, Case Management, Social Work, Human Resources, Employee and Labor Relations, Ambulatory Services, Facilities, Materials Management, Finance as well as components of the clinical enterprise including Information Systems, Planning and Marketing and the Medical Group. May represent UCSF Health for specific projects or activities that involve the Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco (BCHSF) administration at other local hospitals or community agencies.
This role is essential and participates with leadership at all level to develop short and long term strategies that support the nursing workforce and patient care outcomes. Fosters change management skills in direct reporting leadership team to promote an agile and flexible workforce. Represents nursing on cross-functional committees; has external presence in community, professional organizations and societies. Oversees large, multiple departments. Ensures that quality nursing care is provided and in alignment with internal policy and external regulations for the medical center and / or health system.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF.

The salary range for this position is $286,000-$312,000 (Base Annual Rate).

Department Description

Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco (BCHSF) is a part of the UC Health System. Complex tertiary care is provided to pediatric patients using a model of Family Center Care. As a regional referral center for Northern California, BCHSF is a nursing leader and continuing looking to improve on current performance with patient safety as the center core for this work. The Pediatric Acute Care Patient Care Director is essential to this work and leading the care provided patients and families in the Acute Care setting

Required Qualifications


  • At least 5 years of nursing management and leadership experience in large academic, complex, or highly matrixed health care organization.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the American Nurses Credential Center (ANCC) Magnet journey and process.
  • Advanced knowledge of hospital operations in a multi-hospital setting; knowledge of appropriate professional standards for the multidisciplinary team.
  • Advanced communications and interpersonal skills to promote an effective model of shared governance among multiple disciplines. Ability to motivate and engage all levels of staff. regarding patient care programs, strategies, and organizational mission and values.
  • Advanced leadership, with demonstrated fiscal and operations management skills. Ability to develop nurse leaders in their adoption and promotion of a shared governance model of collaboration.
  • In-depth knowledge of a broad scope of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
  • BSN or Master's Degree in nursing.
  • Master's degree in nursing or relevant area.
  • RN - California License or eligible.
  • Current AHA CPR.

Preferred Qualifications


  • PALS certification.
  • Ability to engage in professional nursing associations, academic nursing partnerships, and nursing community to represent UCSF Nursing Services
  • Experience with LEAN methodologies and/or knowledge and support of Lean Management principles.
  • Ability to develop a systems strategic plan and implementing that vision across a large, complex organization.

License/Certification
