About the Opportunity

This position is responsible for supporting ongoing projects for the CHATS (Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science) Lab and Core in the field of cancer prevention and control with a specific emphasis in cancer communication science.

The Communicating for Health in Appalachia by Translating Science (CHATS) Core provides specialized health communication services that translate research into practice. CHATS blends complementary expertise in communication science and health behavior theory (CHATS Lab) with knowledge translation and dissemination science (CHATS Core) to transform scientific evidence into actionable communication interventions targeted to diverse real-world settings. The CHATS Core consults with internal and external partners providing; (1) dissemination planning, (2) communication material development, and (3) customized training presentations and workshops.

This position will serve both the CHATS Lab, assisting in ongoing research activities, and the CHATS Core, supporting ongoing projects for both internal and external clients. The person in this role will gain practical experience in health communication, mixed methods research, social listening, knowledge translation, and dissemination science.

What You'll Do

Specialized communication services
* Participates in the creation and dissemination of cancer information through the development of resources such as handouts, flyers, presentations, internal and external communications, videos, photographs, posters, infographics, social media, websites, etc.
* Monitors and utilizes CHATS project management software, running reports on progress and efficiencies when requested.
* Monitors Core email for requests and concerns, ensure requests are added to the workflow.
* Assist with the planning and development of multimedia projects.
* Identifies, develops, and maintains partnerships with strategic stakeholders, community, and professional partners, and various community-based organizations throughout West Virginia, the Appalachian region, and the nation.
* Oversees and directs student volunteers and interns.
* Develops dissemination plans for both internal and external clients.
* Monitors Core email for requests and concerns, ensure requests are added to the workflow.
* Acts as a liaison between CHATS Core staff and clients, both internal and external.
* Develops, maintains, and reviews service agreements for each client.
* Coordinates in-classroom, virtual or community-based trainings, demonstrations, meetings, conferences, and workshops.
* Coordinates statewide and regional meetings, trainings, and special events which may include managing the continuing education credit process and other administrative activities related to event planning.
* Assists in the evaluation of training activities documenting short- and long-term impact as well as maintaining participation records.
* Promotes Core training opportunities through various networks and work collaboratively with CHATS Lab multimedia specialist to develop promotional materials.
* Seeks out clinical and research partnerships to promote training opportunities with existing and new networks to further expand reach of the CHATS Core.
* Assists in maintaining the CHATS Academy learning management software and all courses therein.

Audience insights
* Conducts research and evaluation activities as directed, including but not limited to coding, analysis, and survey administration.
* Executes and implements specific segments of a research project.
* Investigates and recommends alternative approaches to improve quality of results.
* Learn and utilize social listening platform.
* Conducts literature reviews.
* Utilizes and maintains data collection tools.
* Contributes to IRB development and maintenance.
* Contributes to the dissemination of findings and projects associated with the CHATS Lab, including developing training for researchers and the public.
* Performs various support duties, responds to inquiries and resolves matters of significant complexity; requires decision making and resourcefulness within available guides and precedents.
* Assists with the development of grant applications to further research opportunities
* Contributes to articles, abstracts, and posters to promote programmatic work and outreach of CPC.

Department of Cancer Prevention & Control
* Functions as a team member of Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC). Assists with other CPC program activities as requested by Senior Staff members.
* Manages day to day programming for one or more specific CPC programs or WVUCI priority projects.
* Completes all required WVU trainings and certifications.
* Functions as a member of the CPC staff and participates in staff meetings, required conferences, training seminars, program meetings, regular team meetings, etc. Includes conferences and training seminars provided by the WVUCI, Mountains of Hope (MOH) Cancer Coalition, and other relevant entities.
* Participates in and contributes to the mission, vision, and strategic plan of WVU Cancer Institute (WVUCI) and the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC).
* Represents WVU Cancer Institute and/or CPC at state, regional, and national meetings, and conferences.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in appropriate discipline: public health, health communications, social work, health education, healthcare administration, marketing, or other healthcare professions degree.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in the following:
    • Health-related health communication
    • Research and/or public health dissemination
    • Coordinating health education programs, event planning, group dynamics, leadership, and program assessment preferred.
    • Experience with community outreach and education, public communication and activities, and academic detailing with healthcare personnel preferred.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including writing correspondence and preparing reports.
  • Strong time management, organization, and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Skilled at synthesizing discussions for documentation and preparing accurate meeting minutes.
  • Ability to establish priorities, adhere to deadlines, have high attention to detail and follow through, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with general computer applications including Microsoft Office.
  • Skilled in maintaining cooperative working partnerships.
  • Ability to work in multidisciplinary team environment and to coordinate participation of team members from various backgrounds.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and with significant degree of independence.
  • Commitment to principles of community, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to travel with occasional overnight stays, working outside the traditional work week when needed.
  • Ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Knowledge of current health issues, health education and behavioral theories, and health information needs of the medically underserved preferred.
  • Ability to interact sensitively, effectively, and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds and persons of all ages and orientations.
