  • REPORTS TO: Associate Principal for Curriculum

    POSITION OBJECTIVE: Provide school nursing services, including those with significant health needs, in order to promote student safety, wellness, access to learning, and compliance with School Code and Illinois Department of Public Health mandated student health requirements. The Certified School Nurse supports students with chronic health conditions, emergency medical needs, medication administration, health education, and care coordination. Services are delivered in alignment with IDEA, IEP/504 requirements, Illinois School Code, and district policies to ensure student well-being and full participation in the educational environment.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed as a School Nurse
    2. Valid license as a registered professional nurse in Illinois
    3. Bachelor's degree in Nursing required; Master's degree in Nursing, Public Health, or related field preferred
    4. Current Adult and Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and AED certification
    5. Qualified IDPH Vision and Hearing Technician preferred
    6. Experience supporting students with complex adaptive, behavioral, sensory, or communication needs
    7. Ability to assist students with daily living and life skills, including feeding, toileting, mobility support, and personal care, while promoting independence.
    8. Ability to safely lift, support, and assist students as needed, including occasional physical handling and transport, in a manner consistent with best practices and student safety protocols.
    9. Experience working successfully in a diverse, multicultural environment

    REQUIRED SKILLS:

    • Ability to assess student health needs, including chronic conditions, acute illness, injuries, and emergency situations
    • Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, Illinois School Code, and Illinois Department of Public Health school health service requirements
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, support staff, families, administrators, and related service providers
    • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor health plans, IEP/504 health components, and emergency action plans
    • Ability to administer medications, perform nursing procedures, and manage medical equipment
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills
    • Ability to respond calmly and effectively to medical, behavioral, or crisis situations
    • Ability to use technology and data systems for documentation, reporting, and health record management
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and families

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Provides School Nursing Services

    • Assumes active role in the formation, review and revision of health and wellness procedures, policies and functions of the school health program
    • Conducts health assessments to determine student needs and eligibility for nursing-related services
    • Develops, maintains, and implements Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and IEP/504 health components
    • Provides direct nursing services including care of illness or injury, medication administration, treatments, and monitoring of chronic conditions
    • Responds to illness, injuries, and medical emergencies in accordance with district protocols
    • Supports student participation in school routines, activities, and learning environments
    • Administers medication and completes treatments and procedures as ordered by the medical care provider and documents appropriately
    • Adheres to the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

    Supports Students with Health and Wellness Needs

    • Assists students with diabetes, seizure disorders, asthma, allergies, and other chronic conditions
    • Provides health counseling and education to promote wellness, self-advocacy, and independence
    • Monitors communicable disease concerns and collaborates with public health agencies as needed
    • Supports students requiring medical equipment, adaptive devices, or specialized health procedures
    • Assists in the prevention of the spread of communicable diseases

    Collaborates with Staff and Families

    • Participates in IEP, 504, case conferences, and multidisciplinary team meetings
    • Consults with teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff to embed health-related supports into daily routines
    • Participates in a multidisciplinary team by completing and presenting health history, writing health components of the Annual Review, and indicating accommodations related to health concerns
    • Communicates regularly with families regarding student health needs, updates, and care coordination
    • Provides training and guidance to staff on emergency procedures, health plans, and medical protocols
    • Assists students and families in accessing health care
    • Provides staff training on Health Plans and medical concerns for individual students as needed.
    • Trains appropriate staff on delegable nursing tasks as per Nurse Practice Act and documents training annually or as needed

    Compliance and Documentation

    • Maintains accurate and timely health records in compliance with IDEA, state, and district requirements
    • Maintains compliance as required by the Illinois School Code and Illinois Department of Public Health for state mandated student health requirements.
    • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
    • Monitors student progress and adjusts health plans as needed
    • Maintains required licensure and participates in professional development

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:182 day working calendar

    WORKING CONDITIONS: Work requires mobility throughout the school building, responding to emergencies, and performing nursing procedures. Work is performed indoors.

    SALARY RANGE: Salary is based on years of experience and educational background in accordance with the District's salary schedule.
