The Director of Actuarial within UHC Medicare & Retirement will perform various analytics related to Medicare Supplement business performance, support and help drive regulatory advocacy efforts and will complete rate filings for Medicare Supplement products. The Director will perform critical data analysis, SAS/SQL/Excel modeling, and actuarial analytics while developing and strengthening processes and models. As a subject matter expert, the Director will work directly with state regulators to file and obtain state rate filing approvals.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week. The preferred location for this position is the Fort Washington, PA office.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Medicare Supplement Rate Filings & Regulatory Engagement: Participating in and supporting the full end to end Medicare Supplement rate filing process, including preparing filings, ensuring compliance to state regulatory requirements, and collaborating directly with regulators to address inquiries and making recommendations to influence filing outcomes
    • Accurately document pricing methodologies and assumptions within statutory filings
    • Develop, enhance, execute, and validate models that support regulatory filing strategy and activities
  • Analytics and Performance Insights: Conduct analytical assessments of claim trends, pricing and overall business performance, providing insights that inform filing strategy and regulatory advocacy initiatives.
    • Build and refine analytics to support both existing and emerging advocacy efforts
    • Apply actuarial theory in a practical, business focused manner, considering constraints such as data availability, timing, and market dynamics
    • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, including senior leadership
  • Market & Regulatory Monitoring: Monitor competitive actions, market dynamics, and regulatory developments, proactively assessing their impact on the business and recommending actions that influence strategic decision making at senior levels
  • Collaboration & Influence: Partner with cross-functional partners including product, finance, actuarial, sales, legal/compliance, and state filings teams to address business challenges and deliver integrated solutions

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Finance, Math, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, or a related degree
  • ASA (Associate of the Society of Actuaries) or FSA (Fellow of the Society of Actuaries) designation
  • 8+ years of actuarial experience
  • Experience with healthcare pricing or filing
  • Hands-on experience in building actuarial models in Excel and Access, Power Pivot
  • Advanced or higher level of proficiency in MS Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Actuarial Experience working with Medicare plans (preferably Medicare Supplement)
  • Basic to intermediate level of proficiency with SAS (Statistical Analysis System) and/or SQL (Structured Query Language)
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with internal customers across multiple departments
  • Ability to approach issues from broad strategic perspective while also focusing on the details
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $134,600 to $230,800 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
