Hearth & Home Technologies is looking for a Technical Writer to join our Fireplaces Business Unit in Lake City, MN. This job is responsible for the technical writing, editorial review, formal release, content and file management of all product support documentation and labeling intended for customer use.
Key Responsibilities
- Documentation Development
- Perform technical writing, editing, revision, content and file management of product installation manuals, warning labels and user guides
- Creates visual illustrations for documents using 3D Modeling Software
- Integrates supporting digital content into written instructions through the use of links, QR codes, or other means
- Coordinate translations of documentation with vendors, and/or perform document translations
- Modernize content and writing expectations with evolving forms of media (multimedia, digital integration, UX (User Experience) alignment
- Document Control & Revision Management
- Coordinates document changes and ensures consistency of documentation standards through interaction with offsite documentation staff. This includes ensuring basic standards are met for document quality, clarity and content at other HHT (Hearth & Home Technologies) locations
- Ensures product documentation is properly controlled from release through obsolete, and that current revisions are available for both production and approved user access on a timely basis
- Perform projects related to continuous improvement of documentation and documentation systems. Supports strategies for the implementation of document improvement and change
- Regulatory & Safety Compliance
- Ensures appropriate safety and warning content is properly presented in the product documentation and labeling through interaction with engineering, purchasing, quality, reliability, product liability, legal, agency, governmental bodies and other resources
- Maintains familiarity with applicable domestic and international standards and codes to ensure compliance of product documentation and labeling consistent with the required standard of care
- Works with relevant agencies to ensure proper listing approvals are acquired and maintained
- Cross Functional Collaboration
- Interacts effectively with engineers, designers, product managers, quality, and trade partners to understand critical product features requiring explanation in product documentation
- Observes production, developmental, and experimental activities to determine operating procedure
- Additional Responsibilities
- Juggles shifting priorities and contributes to establishing deadlines/scope of projects
- Duties involve some confidentiality and some delayed detection of error with a high impact on the organization
- May train others on essential duties of position
Minimum Requirements
- 4 year degree and 3 years' experience in technical writing or a combination of education and experience
- 3 or more years' experience working with desktop publishing software, including but not limited to InDesign and Acrobat Professional
- Experience working with content management system
- Ability to manage multiple projects and set priorities
Preferred Qualifications
- Illustrator, DraftSight, Creo and Photoshop
- Developing multimedia content (e.g. video, animations, interactive troubleshooting)
- Experience with business management software
- Experience with structured content and file management
- Ability to interact effectively with technical staff, read engineering drawings & specs, think through safety implications, and translate materials into user-friendly content
- Ability and creativity to produce effective documentation that will be used, easily read, and understood by a wide diversity of customers. Interpersonal skills to coordinate these needs with documentation staff at company sites
- Experience working as a team player, results oriented and the ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment
