LICENSED OPERATOR – Grade 2A or Higher

The City of Middletown is seeking qualified and motivated candidates for the position of Licensed Water Treatment Plant Operator (Grade 2A or higher) to work at the City’s Grade 1A licensed Water Treatment Plant. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient treatment and delivery of drinking water to the community in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, and maintenance of water treatment processes and equipment. Duties include performing routine operational checks, collecting and analyzing water samples, conducting laboratory testing, maintaining accurate operational and regulatory records, and assisting with light maintenance of plant equipment, facilities, and grounds. Operators must be able to recognize and respond to operational issues, alarms, and emergencies, and take appropriate corrective action in accordance with established procedures.

This position requires flexibility, as operators may be scheduled to work weekends, evenings, nights, and afternoon shifts, as well as respond to emergencies or plant needs outside of normal working hours. Candidates should demonstrate a strong working knowledge of water treatment principles, laboratory techniques, sampling methods, and safety practices, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Employment is subject to Middletown Civil Service rules and examination procedures, and applicants must meet all licensing and certification requirements at the time of appointment. Residency in New York State and within 25 miles of the City of Middletown’s borders is required.
