Summer Course: Fitness, Weightlifting, and Nutrition Description

In this fitness course, which follows set guidelines per the National Strength and Conditioning Association's stance on weightlifting for young adults, students will learn the basics behind designing their own individualized fitness program. Proper technique will be emphasized for all activities and modifications for exercises will be taught based on students' needs. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to use an Olympic barbell and the various exercises that can be utilized with it. Additionally, students will learn proper gym/weight room etiquette. Under the direction of the Summer Program Director at Geffen Academy at UCLA, the Summer Athletic, Strength, and Conditioning Educator will create this course of study, prepare materials, and deliver an excellent summer Athletic, Strength and Conditioning enrichment course for Geffen Academy's Summer Program students. The Educator will teach three courses; one course designed for students entering the rising 5th grade summer program (60 minutes), one course for students entering grade 6 ( 50 minutes each), and one course for students entering grades 7-12 (90 minutes). All classes meet once, daily, over a three week period. The courses are taught in-person on Geffen Academy's Campus. Job Duties
- Consistent with the department's goals, participate in the design and development of curricula that cultivate creativity, innovation, and joy in learning.
- Design and implement interactive learning experiences that foster students' understanding of physical fitness and nutrition, with attention to enhancing performance in their dedicated sport(s).
- Create engaging exercise and stretching routines that motivate students and support the achievement of short-term fitness goals.
- Engage students in real-world functional fitness and bodyweight exercises that build strength, flexibility, and overall wellness.
- Create a learning environment where students feel safe, welcome, supported, and appropriately challenged.
- Consistent with department leadership's direction, collaborate with other educators to develop Geffen Academy programs that meet the needs and interests of students.
- Be available to students and families to address department-related questions or concerns.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in a related field, with a strong background in secondary education.
- Familiarity with educational management systems and instructional platforms, including Blackbaud, Google Classroom, and Zoom.
- Demonstrated personal integrity, sound judgment, diplomacy, patience, and a strong work ethic.
- Strong experience working with students ages 10-17, including designing and delivering high-quality curriculum and educational programming aligned with institutional values.
- Ability to think and act strategically while maintaining a strong commitment to providing an excellent and accessible educational experience for every student.
- Self-directed and able to effectively prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in an environment subject to frequent interruption.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and sustain effective, collaborative working relationships with staff.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly to students, families, and colleagues.
- Exceptional listening skills and sensitivity to the needs and perspectives of others.
- Collegial and collaborative professional disposition; an enthusiastic and reliable team member.
