Structural Engineer - Mission Critical Our Mission Critical team is looking to add an experienced team member to our group of talented Structural Engineers. Position Summary As a Structural Engineer II at HED, you bring licensure and 2-4 years of professional experience to deliver integrated, code-compliant, and forward-thinking structural solutions. In this role, you apply engineering expertise to analyze, design, and document building systems, coordinate across disciplines, and participate in all phases of design and construction. With professional judgment and collaboration at the core of your approach, you contribute to HED's mission of creating positive impact through design while continuing to expand your sector knowledge and leadership potential. Essential Functions:
- Independently develop and document structural systems for projects of moderate scope with oversight from senior engineers.
- Perform detailed structural analysis and design using industry-standard tools such as RAM, RISA, ETABS, and Enercalc.
- Apply engineering judgment to select and justify design approaches that meet project goals, code requirements, and budget constraints.
- Coordinate structural design with architectural, MEP, and civil disciplines to ensure fully integrated building solutions.
- Generate and prepare deliverables, including engineering calculations, plans, details, and technical specifications.
- Participate in internal design reviews, coordination meetings, and client-facing discussions.
- Conduct construction administration activities including submittal reviews, RFI responses, and occasional site visits.
- Research and implement applicable codes, regulations, and standards to ensure structural compliance and safety.
- Support the mentoring of junior staff and interns in design tools, workflow, and quality standards.
- Contribute to BIM model development and documentation using Revit.
- Advance innovation and sustainability by investigating new materials, systems, and methods.
- Maintain organized project documentation and participate in internal quality control reviews.
- Continue to work across multiple sectors as a generalist while developing deeper expertise in the structural needs of select sectors.
- Participate in the DWP process, tracking time required to complete tasks and supporting junior team members.
- Perform other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Discipline Leader or project lead.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering or similar related field, from an ABET/EAC accredited institution.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
- 2-4 years of structural engineering experience in a professional setting.
- Proficiency in Revit (core) preferred.
- Proficiency in structural analysis tools such as RAM, RISA, ETABS, Enercalc or similar required.
- Professional knowledge of building codes and industry standards (IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, AISC 360, NDS/SDPWS, TMS 402), and engineering fundamentals.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and design insight.
- Enthusiastic, flexible, and collaborative in multidisciplinary environments.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in-person.
- Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
