About this opportunity:

Ball State University is searching for a full-time detail-oriented person with excellent verbal and written communication skills. This is a mid-level position that reports directly to the University Controller. Responsibilities include assisting with various tax filings including the Federal 990-T (Unrelated Business Income Tax), 1042-S, 1098T, 1099 and Indiana state and country taxes (including Sales and Use tax); Indiana property tax filings; providing training and consultation to university personnel; staying current on applicable federal, state and local tax laws and regulations. This position will also have limited financial reporting duties. This position will be primarily on-campus.

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function:

Support the University Controller and other administrative offices with tax compliance and reporting. Review and analyze new or changing tax regulation at all levels of government. Provide insight of the impact of tax compliance on the University including the changes in policies and procedures. Assist with all tax compliance issues including sales and use tax, property, taxable fringe benefits, unrelated business income, global international tax compliance, awards, prizes and payments to international and domestic persons. Monitor and ensure the timely filing of the University's various tax submissions for federal, state and local obligations. Support administration with correspondence with federal, state and local tax regulatory agencies. Analyze accounting information in the Banner system to ensure accurate data collection and report generation for accurate tax reporting. Provide training and consultation to university personnel for tax related matters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for monitoring all tax related deadlines and ensuring payments are made to the state and federal regulatory agencies timely.

Stay current and serve as an information resource on the latest pronouncements from federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations, and notify supervisor of any changes that may impact our current processes.

Provide updates to existing policies and procedures to be compliant with the changing tax environment while balancing industry best practices and BSU culture.

Maintain a thorough understanding of all the Controllers' policies and procedures. Be prepared to answer questions from the campus community. Manage the bsutax email, tax and policy related ServiceNow tickets, and Jaggaer requisitions.

Provide support with the state and federal Foreign Gift and Contract Reporting.

Organize and prepare property tax filings. Work with the county and the Foundation to resolve disputes.

Coordinate with the appropriate offices on campus to obtain unrelated business income information and answer questions. Prepare workpapers and the Form 990T.

Manage and update the various states' Sales Tax Exemption Certificates.

Prepare the University's Sales, Use, and County Innkeepers Tax, Food and Beverage Tax monthly returns.

Support Payroll with multiple state SUI updates and state tax withholding and reporting issues.

Support the Controller, Payroll and Benefits offices with tax regulatory agencies and auditors to provide information and resolve disputes.

Provide assistance with the review of selected contracts for issues relating to tax compliance including, tax exempt status of properties, employee classification, and international tax compliance.

Provide training to university personnel regarding tax matters and ensuring that any tax related information is being collected and reported accurately.

Provide support to personnel throughout the university with analysis of account activity, interpretation of accounting, financial and tax information and the design of the spreadsheets and other financial analysis and recording tools to better enable them to monitor the financial activity for which they are responsible.

Cross-train and support financial reporting team as needed.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field from an accredited institution.

At least two years of tax, financial or audit experience, one year of which should be in a public accounting firm or a public university.

Excellent oral and written communication skills; practical experience with Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

C.P.A. and or master's degree in Taxation

Knowledge of Banner accounting system; experience with federal, Indiana and local tax laws and regulations applicable to public colleges and universities; knowledge and experience with international regulatory issues common to institutions of higher education.

Strong analytical skills.
