Job Overview:

States United Democracy Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rule of law and free, fair, and secure elections, is seeking an organized, diligent, and detail-oriented contract Research and Project Management attorney to be part of the team that manages a critical organizational project that includes legal research, project management, and quality assurance. The attorney will assist in project management and will conduct initial legal research, ongoing monitoring of new cases and relevant appeals and case developments, tracking cases, monitoring dockets, draft summaries of litigation for both sophisticated legal users and the general public, update project tracking materials, and shepherd approval processes. This is a part-time, contract, temporary position.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform all duties in accordance with States United's values of integrity, inclusion, collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
  • Project manage litigation tracking project including via: maintaining database or similar content management system for cases; monitoring new cases, appeals, and case developments; and drafting summaries of litigation, cases, outcomes and processes for sophisticated users and the public.
  • Other research as needed
Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Attorney with 3-5 years of post-JD experience, including familiarity with and knowledge of litigation.
  • Attorney admitted to the bar in at least one state.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and quantitative analysis skills to ensure the Dashboard and public facing resources remain current, accurate, and useful for users and key audiences.
  • Available 10-15 hours a week with the opportunity to scale up and down based on case developments.
  • Available to join small team meetings approximately once a week in 2026 and as needed following public launch.
  • Familiarity with databases or content management systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across teams and in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to States United's mission, and to advancing free, fair and secure elections.
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense, and good listening ability.
  • Must be able to commit to a minimum of 15% travel time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working on or familiarity with issues related to elections, voting, rule of law, and state government.

Compensation + Benefits:

  • Compensation for this position will be $100 per hour.

We have offices located in Boston, MA; Brooklyn, NY; and Washington, DC. This position may also be remote within the United States, with travel to attend organizational and team meetings and conferences, and other travel as needed.
