Job Summary:

The Assistant Racing & Quarter Horse Secretary is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operation of the Racing Office. In addition, the team member may be responsible for overseeing the operation of the Racing Office, direct involvement with the horsemen, and racing department team members. Responsible for supporting the Company's mission, vision, and values by providing an unparalleled experience of fun and entertainment.

The pay range for this seasonal role is up to $1,650 per week of employment. Placement within the range is based on relevant experience and qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Lead by example.
  • Responsible for maintaining a high degree of hospitality, as well as a positive and professional demeanor at all times.
  • Creates high levels of morale, fosters teamwork, inspires collaboration, and provides suggestions for growth to management.
  • Assist the Racing Secretary with all Racing Office operations, including processing entries and nominations, verifying eligibility, maintaining preference dates, and performing related administrative duties during live racing meets.
  • Analyze official past performance records to assist in the creation and organization of competitive races between horses of comparable experience and ability.
  • Confer with the Racing Secretary to plan race types, determine purses, and structure race programs that support competitive and balanced racing.
  • Assist in handicapping races by assigning weights or allowances based on known performance data and established guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all races, entries, results, and performance data to support historical tracking and race planning.
  • Record and update official racing results to maintain individual horse performance files and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure the safekeeping, documentation, and proper return of registered certificates to horse owners.
  • Assist in proofreading and finalizing the official racing program for each live racing day to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Racing Office and horsemen, addressing racing-related inquiries and fostering clear communication.
  • Collaborate with the Racing Secretary in staffing and coordinating Racing Office personnel to maintain efficient Racing Office operations.
  • Serve as the official horse identifier by confirming each horse's identity (tattoo/microchip, sex, color, markings) against required documentation, overseeing identification prior to digital tattooing, and maintaining accurate records of equipment and identification numbers for all horses racing.

Required Qualifications:



  • At least 3-5 years of experience in racetrack industry at a management level.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, executives, managers and horsemen.
  • Ability to maintain a calm, composed presence in an often-challenging environment where multiple tasks and events may occur simultaneously.
  • The highest of moral integrity and a strong work ethic.
  • Must be able to pass Canterbury Park's pre-employment screening which includes a criminal background check and verification of work history.
  • Must be able to attain a Minnesota Racing Commission (MRC) license.

  • Maintain a flexible working schedule, which may include nights and weekends during the live race season May - September.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and sit throughout the assigned shift.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Requires frequent wrist and hand use.
