Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Student Health Services provides student-centered medical and wellness services which are affordable and accessible. Utilizes a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to wellness and health care. Provides an environment of inclusion, respect, and appreciation of diversity. SHS is committed to: providing reasonably comprehensive ambulatory medical services to all eligible students; promoting disease prevention through health education; providing non- classroom health education on issues that impact the student both physically and psychologically; provide ancillary support services (i.e. laboratory, pharmacy, and administrative); providing advisory, collaborative, and educational assistance to other university departments; and ensuring staff competency to support and fulfill this mission. Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the nurses and medical providers in the medical clinic, women's health clinic and vaccination clinic. This person will be responsible for preparing patients for medical procedures and preparing equipment for daily operation. This position assists the physician and other healthcare providers with standards assignments and interpreting doctor's orders and diagnoses to patients. They screen patients, document vital signs and chief complaints, obtain lab specimens per protocol, and manage patient/office appointments.

The Certified Medical Assistant collaborates with the providers by performing vital signs, patient questionnaire intake, data entry and medical records management. They must perform laboratory procedures under the direct supervision of the Medical Laboratory Director. Duties include venous draws, Urinalysis, Occult blood testing, Raid Strep A testing and urine pregnancy test. Also responsible for inventory control (i.e.: ordering and restocking lab supplies); must also provide clerical support to the Medical Clinic.

Assists with and provides patient care services and customer services, as necessary. Maintains all patient care related documentation in hard copy and/or electronic medical records. Must demonstrate skill in clinical duties such as vitals, health history and other clinical duties as directed by clinicians. Duties include retrieving student medical records, making referrals for students, sending out letters for the medical providers; and calling students directly, setting up appointment times for medical providers and outside referrals. Possesses time management skills and the ability to multitask, good communication skills to assist patients and providers, as necessary.

Minimum Education/Experience
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Necessary Special Qualification Requirements - Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants ( AAMA).
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
Licensure
Current American Heart Association ( AHA) BLS certification required. Current Medical Assistant Certification through a recognized national professional association such as the AAMA (American Association of Medical Assistants), the AMT (American Medical Technologists), NAHP (The National Association of Healthcare Professions), the ARMA (American Registry of Medical Assistants), or the NHA (National Healthcare Association).

Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties

  • Knowledge of basic medical assistant techniques and procedures in the routine care and treatment of patients.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures and terminology.
  • Individuals will room patients to include taking vitals, ensuring individual has completed all electronic documents.
  • Applies basic knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and terminology needed to complete work.
  • Applies basic knowledge of specimen processing, and test procedures
  • Assist with inventory control, ordering and restocking of clinical items.
  • Administers medications under the direction of a provider.

Duties

  • Patient triage-obtain vital signs and chief compliant
  • Enter patient medical data in computer information system
  • Assist with physical examination(s)
  • Assist provider with patient call backs
  • Sterilizing medical instruments or equipment
  • Noting patients' medical histories
  • Organize and rotate medical supplies stock
  • Obtain medical records and correspondents from referral source
  • Administering medications or injections under supervision
  • This position will provide professional and caring approach to service delivery.
  • Maintains immunization or medication registry, performs medication, or other required audits.
  • Ensures exam/procedure room contains appropriate supplies, equipment, forms and educational materials are available and ready for use during visit/procedure.



Required Competency Laboratory/Subject Care
Duties

  • Receives and prepares specimens for testing including verifying identification, assigning accession numbers, and arranging specimens.
  • Collecting and preparing blood samples for testing
  • Collects routine specimens from patients following standard patient care and collection procedures.
  • Follow established protocols for data collection.
  • Assist in performing components of routine and standardized tests following prescribed procedures.
  • The ability to perform the following: a)Venipuncture, b)EKG's, c)Complete Blood Count (CBC), d) Urinalysis , e)Prepare slides
  • Send negative Pap Smear report via email / mail



Required Competency Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Duties

  • This position will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare staff.
  • This position will assist the providers with customer service for procedures being performed.
  • This position is expected to document appropriate information and ensure discharge instructions are presented to the patients.

  • Organizes work assignments; provides routine office support.
  • Organize, count, and rotate medical supplies.
  • Will provide clerical supporting relating to medical records to include retrieving and uploading required information to EHR database.
  • Call students directly to set up appointments and follow up appointments.
  • Works under the clinical supervision of the provider for patient care activities, and under the general direction of the designated manager/supervisor.
