Description
Summary: The Dialysis Technician is responsible for managing daily technical duties in the dialysis unit and supporting the safe operation and monitoring of dialysis equipment. This role contributes to the delivery of high-quality, family-centered, and developmentally appropriate patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. Responsibilities:
- Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
- Maintains clinical competency by ensuring that the physiological, psychosocial, and developmental needs of the patient are met within a family-centered care environment.
- Prepares and disassembles hemodialysis equipment daily or as needed, according to procedure and dialysis prescription, with 100% accuracy.
- Monitors the water purification system each patient shift for compliance with standards for water treatment used for dialysis described by AAMI standards (American Association of Medical Instrumentation), with 100% accuracy.
- Assists with the treatment of hemodialysis patients as assigned by the supervisory nursing staff in compliance with departmental standards.
- Maintains dialysis equipment according to prescribed procedures and with accountability for cost-effective management while helping to ensure that the department achieves patient care goals.
- Maintains water treatment system by inspecting daily and ensuring that safety and quality control are in compliance with the standards for water treatment used for dialysis as described by the American Association of Medical Instrumentation and the Texas Department of Health.
- Prepares purchase orders within one week of request.
- Monitors par levels of supplies for the Central Distribution and Dialysis equipment and supply rooms at least weekly and ensures that adequate levels of supplies are stored appropriately.
- Maintains daily records on water treatment systems, machines, and dialysis equipment.
- Demonstrates effective communication skills with the health care team and other hospital departments.
- Consults, as directed, with various hospital departments and outside vendors as directed by supervisory personnel to help maintain continuity of unit and departmental operational standards.
- Continuously maintains professional conduct and good communication skills and confidentiality in patient care that help to promote quality assurance and continuous quality improvement activities as related to patient care and unit operations.
- Supports patient education goals of the unit by demonstrating adherence to patient care policies and procedures as outlined by IDS and unit standards of care.
- Assists with educational activities, at least quarterly, that support unit's annual educational goals.
- Manages time so that workflow is efficient and consistent.
- Performs tasks daily that help to maintain unit organization.
- Consolidates "non-stat" errands off the unit to minimize workflow interruption.
- Maintains an orderly work area.
- Submits copies of completed pharmacy requisitions, purchase order forms, machine quality control reports, and Biomed reports by the first of the month to the Nurse Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Education/Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Experience
- 2 years of dialysis-related experience required
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
- BLS required
- One of the following is required within 1 year of hire
- Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT) by BONENT
- Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) by NNCC
- Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician - Advanced (CCHT-A) by NNCC
