Shipfitter


Purpose:


  • Valkyrie Enterprises has a need for a Shipfitter position who will be a key support to fitting on Naval Ships. The Shipfitter will lay out, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms such as plates, bulkheads, and frames within the hull of ship. They will use drawings and specifications to plan fitting and welding operations and ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes and standards.


Job Description:


  • Fabricate templates for bending, shaping, and bracing metal structures.
  • Measure, lay-out and cut templates.
  • Have an understanding of doors, hatches, brackets, and clips to install them on ships.Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches. Use drawings and specifications to plan fitting and welding operations.
  • Set-up and use of portable burning/heating torches for steel plates and shapes using propane, acetylene, and oxygen.
  • Tack weld foundations and braces in place.
  • Locate and mark reference lines, such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
  • Meet scheduling and attendance requirements.
  • Ensure that work is in accordance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Able to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Comply with all OSHA, shipyard safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • May be required to travel to jobsites away from Shipyard and utilize company vehicle.
  • May be required to work more than the standard work week, including weekends.


Qualification:


  • Must have a Highschool diploma or GED; Trade School and/or at least 5 years of experience in the field.
  • Must meet NAVSEA 248 requirements by passing MIL-STD 1689 T9074-AR-GIB-010-278 Workmanship requirements
  • Must be able to understand and interpret welding symbols IAW MIL-STD 22D.


Desired Qualifications:


  • Able to obtain a passport


Security Requirements:


  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance to access private and public shipyards and Naval Installations


Travel Requirements:


  • Up to 50% travel nationwide to include international travel as needed
  • If position requires travel by domestic flight or access to secure federal facilities/military bases, candidate must be able to obtain (by start of position) and maintain appropriate identification credentials, such as REAL ID. Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.

Pay Range: $21 - $27 per hour
