General Information: Purpose or role of the position within the department (brief summary of position): The Social Media Assistant will work closely with the Social Media Manager on the day-to-day management of the JMU social media accounts. As a Social Media Assistant, you'll play an important role in the strategy, voice, and management of the JMU social media accounts.
We're looking for someone with strong communication skills (both verbal and written) who has the desire to stay up-to-date with ever-evolving social media trends and is eager to bring new ideas to the JMU social accounts while staying true to the JMU brand. Duties and Responsibilities: This position is for the Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters. This position will work 10 hours/week with a mix of office hours and as needed for event coverage. 1. Work closely with the Assistant Director of Multimedia Strategy to create branded graphics for JMU's communications and social media properties 2. Utilize JMU's brand guide and branded templates to develop themed designs to support University Communications 3. Design and produce multimedia frames and Stories for JMU's Instagram and Facebook channels 4. Capture and edit campus photos for use in social media/University Communications channels 5. Assist with social media video production 6. Participate in student-led social media content across JMU's channels 7. Assist with other miscellaneous media production tasks within University Communications 8. Assist University Communications staff in promoting faculty experts from all colleges and departments to relevant reporters. This includes pitching faculty members to reporters seeking subject matter experts across various fields. Qualifications: A digital portfolio, or links to examples of the applicant's work, is REQUIRED. * We are looking for motivated SMAD or SADAH majors or minors, or any other students with a passion for graphic design and multimedia creation, to fill these positions, so long as they have a baseline proficiency with the technical aspects of creating digital content, as well as developing a digital audience. Other majors are welcome to apply. Applicants must be full-time James Madison University students for the entire 2025-2026 academic year.
* Applicants must be proficient in the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro.) They should show advanced initiative, self-discipline, excellent interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Other design proficiencies (i.e. illustration, motion graphics, etc.) are valued but not required. Additional Posting Information: Learning Objectives o Create content packages that meets brand and quality standards o Execute content strategies that leverage branded assets o Build proficiency with content production/organization systems o Develop confidence in collaborating with a variety of stakeholders Conditions of Employment: Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
