What You Will Do:

The Kitchen Steward supports the overall cleanliness, sanitation, and operational readiness of the kitchen, catering areas, and storeroom. This role performs dishwashing and warewashing duties, maintains equipment and workspaces, ensures proper waste handling, and assists with restocking and inventory support. The Steward plays a key role in ensuring a safe, organized, and efficient backofhouse environment for all catering and events activities.



Essential Responsibilities

    Clean and maintain the kitchen and storeroom, including equipment, floors, surfaces, and storage areas; follow and support the master cleaning schedule.
  • Wash and dry dishes, pots, pans, and cookware using a threecompartment sink and conveyor dish machine; properly organize and store clean items.
  • Remove garbage, compost, and recyclables from kitchen and work areas to appropriate pickup locations.
  • Clean food preparation equipment, work areas, and surface areas to maintain safe and sanitary conditions.
  • Assist with restocking and organizing the storeroom, receiving incoming deliveries, and supporting basic inventory management.
  • Follows all organizational safety practices; avoids shortcuts that increase risk; identifies unsafe conditions and communicates concerns promptly.
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred but not required.

  • Experience in hospitality, catering, or high volume kitchen environments.
  • Experience receiving deliveries or supporting basic inventory control.
  • Previous kitchen maintenance, dishwashing, or custodial experience.Ability to operate dishwashing equipment (threecompartment sink and conveyor machine).
  • Knowledge of food safety, basic sanitation, and safety practices; ServSafe certification is a plus.
  • Ability to lift 25-50 lbs and stand for long periods in a fastpaced environment.
  • Ability to follow cleaning schedules and complete repetitive tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with catering and facilities staff.

The pay range of the grade for this position is $17.00 to $21.75, hourly (typical workweek is 40 hours). Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate. Offers are based on multiple factors permitted by law, including but not limited to: budgetary considerations, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, market considerations, tenure and standing with the university (applicable to current employees), and internal equity.
