About the Job

Our lab seeks to use cutting edge metabolomics technology and cell culture, translational and mouse models of trophoblast differentiation to discover fundamental mechanisms of placental development. The overarching goal is to understand how maternal diabetes and obesity lead to pregnancy complications and to identify novel strategies to improve placental and pregnancy health. We seek a team member with experience in biological research and interest in maternal and neonatal health and nutrition to contribute to the growth of this research program.

Responsibilities/Duties:

70% - Carry out directed research investigations aimed at understanding placental development using cell culture and translational models. Duties include:

  • Performing cell culture work including maintenance of cell lines obtained from human placenta and guided analysis of cell lines by quantitative PCR, western blotting, microscopy and other techniques as indicated.
  • Isolating and maintaining trophoblasts from human placenta
  • Maintaining accurate records and carefully preparing, collecting and organizing cell lines, samples and specimens
  • Promote lab safety including keeping safety records for personnel and supporting lab safety measures and additional protocols as needed.

30% - Support overall laboratory efforts by:

  • Assisting other members of laboratory with research studies, experiments and assays including acquisition of data and preparation of samples as needed.
  • Ordering reagents and supplies.
  • Maintaining necessary shared resources and reagents to support a well-functioning lab--this will include dishwashing, autoclaving, waste removal and regular
    assessment of resources.

Essential Employees

The successful candidate will be designated as an Essential Employee. Essential Employees are expected to report to campus during a University State of Emergency (reduced operations or campus closure) unless specifically directed by the Department not to report or if directed by civil emergency or medical authorities not to report for health and safety reasons. As an Essential Employee, you must report to campus even if the closure is less than 3 days.

Qualifications

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials

Required qualifications:

  • BA or BS in biological science, biochemistry, physiology, nutrition, chemistry or related field or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years in biological research.
  • Demonstrates experience maintaining accurate documentation in laboratory records and experience with computer software including Microsoft products and NCBI web-based available resources (PubMed) required.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and work with rodent and human tissue samples required.
  • Must be physically able to wear protective equipment without restriction.
  • Must be willing to work with biospecimens and cell lines collected from human subjects, and successfully complete all compliance training
  • Must be willing to work occasional nights and weekends to support laboratory missions.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with cell culture and knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
  • Ability to participate in experimental design, collect and analyze data.
  • Interest in pregnancy and neonatal health preferred.
  • An ability to commit to at least 1 year of work is preferred.
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $22.25 - $24.00/hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience
