About the Job

Position Overview:
The Financial Professional 1 (8221AA) is an entry-level position within the Finance job family, providing professional-level decision support for Research Animal Resources (RAR). This role ensures the integrity of departmental financial operations by verifying receipts for vouchering, executing special services billing for internal customers, and maintaining customer data within the WDS system to ensure accurate charge direction. In addition to managing procurement requests, the position serves as a primary fiscal liaison for internal and external University customers and contributes to the annual financial planning cycle through budget preparation and the maintenance of departmental billing rates.

Position Responsibilities:

Accounting and Financial Planning Activities (60%)
* Obtain invoices, proof of receipt, and prepare invoices for vouchering
* Act as secondary for maintaining customer billing strings in WDS system
* Investigate and respond to billing inquiries and prepare billing corrections as needed
* Assist with annual budget preparation
* Assist with annual per diem and special services rate calculations
* Manage billing email account for the department
* Perform financial reporting and ad hoc analysis as requested

Procurement Activities (30%)
* Support procurement activities of the department by identifying vendors who source needed items
* Place PCard and UMarket orders for departmental personnel
* Investigate payment discrepancies with suppliers and recommend course of action

Backup and Other Duties (10%)
* Provide backup support for the physical receiving of research animals for RAR.
* Process cage cards when additional support is needed.
* Participate in special projects as assigned such as updating manuals, writing SOPs, creating job aids, etc.

Working Conditions and Physical/Environmental Requirements:
* Primary work environment will be in an office setting, however, some work may be performed in animal research facilities when providing backup support to teammates.
* Potential exposure to animal allergens, noise and biological materials
* Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, bend, push, pull
* Proof of current Tetanus vaccine is required within the first week of hire

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
BA/BS degree in Finance or Accounting, or a combination of related education and relevant business experience totaling 4 years.
Demonstrated experience understanding financial and economic terminology and concepts.
Familiarity with ERP systems such as PeopleSoft and applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
Demonstrated excellent time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to RAR staff and investigators/ lab staff.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in a University environment.
Attention to detail and an analytical approach to data observation.
Strong customer service skills.
Experience working in Laboratory Animal Medicine/ Research environment.

About the Department

Research Animal Resources (RAR) provides the University of Minnesota research community with animal care, procurement services, veterinary knowledge, and maintenance of housing facilities for animal-related research activities. The department has over 150 employees including Professional and Administrative, Civil Service, and Union Represented employees, all working in support of this mission. RAR has a daily census of over 23,000 rodent cages in 17 buildings split into 7 geographic teams around the Minneapolis and St. Paul campus.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $24.52/hr-$29.81/hr; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 100% Time Appointment

Position Type: Civil-Service & Non-Faculty Labor Represented Staff

Work Profile: Profile 1, Office Lab-Based - is expected to work primarily on-site in the office/lab. Only occasionally and inconsistently working remotely.
