Summary

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Field Technology Assistant Manager to join our Texas division. This is an onsite position at our Dallas office.

The primary role of the Field Technology Assistant Manager is to lead the deployment, adoption, and continuous improvement of field-based construction technology programs across project pursuits and active projects. This role scopes field technology needs with project teams, establishes execution plans and standards, and serves as a visible change leader to ensure tools are consistently adopted and deliver measurable value. The Field Technology Assistant Manager manages 360 capture (OpenSpace), laser scanning, surveying technology support, and drone operations, including hardware fleet planning and forecasting, training and onboarding, operational support, data quality control, billing/chargeback coordination, and vendor feedback to drive product and process improvement.

Essential Functions

Program Leadership (Project Partnership, Adoption, Forecasting, and Governance)
* Project partnership & scoping: Partner with project teams during pursuit, startup, and execution to scope field technology needs, define deliverables, and align workflows to the project plan and schedule.
* Change leadership & adoption: Lead adoption by onboarding teams, reinforcing standards, tracking usage/compliance, and re-engaging projects when adoption stalls; remove barriers in coordination with Operations, VDC, Survey, Safety, and IT.
* Forecasting & budgeting: Forecast software and hardware needs (licenses, cameras, scanners, drones) based on pipeline, schedules, and scope; support annual budgeting and reforecasting with utilization and demand insights.
* Asset management: Maintain inventories and lifecycle plans; coordinate procurement, maintenance/calibration, redeployment between jobsites, and end-of-life replacement planning.
* Data governance & closeout: Establish standards for data organization, retention, and project closeout deliverables (OpenSpace archives, scan exports, drone deliverables) to ensure long-term usability and traceability.
* Continuous improvement & metrics: Track and report KPIs (adoption, compliance, utilization, turnaround time, quality); capture lessons learned and standardize SOPs; support pilots, evaluations, and vendor feedback loops.
360 Reality Capture (OpenSpace)
* Create, configure, and manage OpenSpace projects; set up maps, permissions, capture standards, naming conventions, and integrations.
* Define capture strategies with project teams (walk paths, frequency, areas of focus) aligned to schedule, QA/QC needs, and reporting requirements.
* Purchase, inventory, distribute, maintain, and redeploy 360 cameras; manage camera logistics between jobsites.
* Manage licensing, billing/chargeback coordination, and usage reporting; ensure cost visibility and compliance with internal standards.
* Collect structured product feedback and coordinate with the software provider to improve functionality, usability, and performance.
Laser Scanning & Point Cloud Services
* Scope laser scanning needs with project teams; develop work plans, schedules, and cost estimates/quotes (internal or external).
* Recommend appropriate scanning hardware/software based on accuracy requirements, environment, and deliverables.
* Perform or oversee scanning operations; ensure safe site practices and coordination with field activities.
* Register, clean, validate, and export point clouds (e.g., RCP/RCS, E57, LAS) and confirm alignment to project control and tolerances.
* Understanding in production of floor flatness, as-built analysis against BIM, scan to mesh, scan to bim
* Implement QA/QC checks and documented acceptance criteria for scan deliverables; manage multiple scanning workloads and priorities.
Surveying Technology Support & Coordination
* Support survey startup and control coordination, including benchmarks, coordinate systems, and project control verification.
* Coordinate with survey teams on layout support, as-built verification, tolerance checks, and field-to-office data workflows.
* Ensure alignment between survey control, BIM models, laser scans, and drone deliverables; help resolve coordinate or datum discrepancies.
* Assist with survey technology workflows (data collectors, GNSS, robotic total stations) including data organization, exchange formats, and deliverable standards.
* Review survey-related deliverables for completeness and usability; support documentation needed for closeout or client deliverables.
Drone Program & Aerial Data
* Manage the drone hardware fleet (aircraft, batteries, payloads, accessories) including maintenance, inventory, and redeployment between jobsites.
* Ensure site-specific flight planning and safety planning are completed; confirm the jobsite understands flight parameters, flight paths, and operational boundaries.
* Coordinate Ground Control Points (GCPs) and accuracy requirements with survey teams for photogrammetry and mapping deliverables.
* Plan and execute flights for progress, photogrammetry, and earthwork/dirtwork tracking; set up drone flights and integrations within OpenSpace as applicable.
* Oversee processing and delivery of aerial outputs; ensure cut/fill, quantities, and progress tracking workflows are functioning and trusted by project teams.
* Pilot training for Part 107, drone hardware, keep pilot certifications up to date

Position Requirements
* Bachelor's degree in construction management, construction technology, surveying/geomatics, engineering, information technology, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
* Demonstrated experience supporting construction projects with field technology, reality capture, surveying, VDC, or related disciplines.
* Must have FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification and maintain currency as required.
* Working knowledge of 360 capture platforms (OpenSpace preferred), laser scanning/point cloud workflows, surveying concepts, and drone operations/photogrammetry.
* Ability to train, coach, and influence field teams; proven change leadership and adoption support experience.
* Strong organization and workload management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
* Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across Operations, VDC, Survey, Safety, IT, and vendor partners.
* Ability to travel to project sites as needed and work in active construction environments.
* Preferred technology experience: Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), Procore, Navisworks, ReCap, Revit, AutoCAD, and Civil 3D.
