POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Director, Member Engagement, provides strategic leadership for the development and growth of APA membership across all career stages, practice settings, and geographies. This role directs the execution of membership strategies that drive recruitment, retention, engagement, and approximately $9 million in annual dues and affinity program revenue.

Working collaboratively across departments, with District Branches, external partners, and members, the Associate Director advances data- and research-driven initiatives that strengthen member value and enhance the membership experience throughout the lifecycle. The role oversees product and program development, omni-channel membership campaigns, virtual community and mentorship strategy, and affinity initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.

The Associate Director supervises the Membership Engagement Manager and Membership Development Manager, fostering a high-performing, accountable "One APA" team culture.



DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES




  • Develop strategies and direct tactics that result in membership growth and engagement across all career levels, geographies, and practice settings, and total revenue of approximately $9 million annually.





  • Supervise and direct the Membership Development Manager, and Member Engagement Manager to ensure quality service is provided and projects are completed in a timely manner and within budget.




Product and Program Management




  • Leads the identification, development, enhancement, and launch of membership products and services based on market research, member insights, and organizational priorities to strengthen member value and drive engagement. Serves as primary staff lead for the relationship with APA's medical student organization (PsychSIGN), directing the development of joint strategies that promote membership and strengthen the student-to-resident pipeline.





  • Leads the strategy and execution of programs and campaigns supporting residents and fellows, including the 100% Club and transition-to-practice initiatives, with a focus on conversion to full membership.Oversees and strategically expands APA's affinity and partner programs to maximize member value, participation, and non-dues revenue, ensuring continued relevance and measurable impact.





  • Directs virtual member community strategy, platform optimization, member onboarding, and performance analytics to increase participation, engagement depth, and retention.





  • Develops and directs member mentorship program to drive engagement among members at all levels, in partnership with the APA Foundation and the Department of Diversity and Health Equity.





  • Develops, implements and tracks the membership acquisition and engagement budgets ($600K) and revenue budget ($9M) under the guidance of the Senior Director, Membership.





  • Provide regular status updates to leadership.





Membership Recruitment, Retention and Engagement




  • Leads development and execution of data-driven, direct omni-channel membership recruitment, engagement, and retention campaigns in collaboration with theIntegrated Marketing Department and multiple external agencies/partners





  • for overseeing audience development, management, and member segmentation strategy to ensure targeted products, programs, and messaging are optimized for acquisition, engagement, and retention,.





  • Collaborates with District Branches to develop tools and resources for use in their own membership recruitment efforts; provide support with the aim of meeting shared goals for recruitment and retention and exemplary member service.





  • Serves as staff liaison or support for APA components including but not limited to the Assembly Caucus of Resident-Fellows (ACORF), RFM caucus, ECP caucus and Membership Committee, as well as any ad hoc work groups





  • Collaborates on APA membership brand campaigns.





  • Responsible for APA's presence at external trade shows and membership's presence at the APA Annual Meeting.





  • Supports APA's micro volunteer efforts through the identification of projects and programs in which members can participate.





  • Ensures excellent outcomes through the development and continuous improvement of processes and standard operating procedures.





Collaboration & Membership Analysis




  • Responsible for proactive collaboration with the Associate Director, Data Operations, for the measurement and impact of products and services.





  • Advises on membership trends and identify problem areas and solutions.





  • Creates feedback loops with leadership and general members to identify member needs and assess membership value on an ongoing basis and make strategic adjustments as needed.





Other duties as required.

  • Relationships span levels internally and externally and center on partnering with clients/customers and organizational partners.





  • Uses diplomatic skills to obtain trust and cooperation in order to resolve issues and/or non-routine matters, manage projects, or achieve appropriate solutions.





  • Likely to represent the organization as a liaison to APA governance and other external coalitions and audiences with feedback provided to management.

  • Demonstrates a general knowledge of the membership department's processes, relationships, and responsibilities as well as the interactions within the organization.





SUPERVISION




  • Directly manages two or more employees: Membership Engagement Manager and Membership Development Manager.



Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS




  • BA/BS preferred. CAE is a plus.





  • At least 5-7+ years of relevant experience in membership strategy, marketing and/or association leadership, preferably with a national medical or professional association.





  • Demonstrated experience initiating, managing delivering and evaluating membership-focused projects, programs, and services.





  • Experience managing expense and revenue budgets.





  • Proven ability to lead and develop staff and manage cross-functional initiatives.





  • Experience with omni-channel marketing, including: direct response channels, digital/social marketing and analytics .





  • Excellent writing skills, with exceptional attention to detail.





  • Excellent verbal and presentation skills.





  • Working knowledge of Association Management Systems, SalesForce is a plus.





  • Experience working in member community platforms (e.g. Higher Logic).





  • Experience working with other technology platforms (e.g. Hubspot, PropFuel, and Google Analytics).





  • Ability to operate effectively in ambiguous and fast-paced environments.
