Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Licensing Manager, Life Science for the Office for Research. The Office for Research's mission is to support the research, scholarship, and creative endeavors of all Rutgers faculty. The Office accomplishes its mission by convening with academic and research leaders, providing integrated, user-focused resources, services, and tools, and partnering with faculty. As an integral member of the Technology Transfer Team, the Licensing Manager, with guidance from the Tech Transfer Associate Director of Licensing, serves as a licensing professional supporting all aspects of complex science and Life Science license-related work and agreements in a diverse range of technologies.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Prepares thorough reviews of new invention disclosures; patents, IP, and technologies; tech-market assessments; competitive landscape; commercial scenarios; patent and license potential.
  • Prepares high-quality written and oral presentations to Technology Transfer and other audiences.
  • Performs increasing responsibilities over time for the creation and management of all aspects of technology commercialization, including marketing material supporting licensing campaigns and commercial programs.
  • Performs increasing responsibilities and independence (to 50% expectation within this grade level) for drafting term sheets, license agreements, discussions with researchers and other stakeholders; preparation of related documents such as NDA, MTA, etc.
  • Works closely and interact effectively with inventors, Technology Transfer staff, and external entities (companies, consultants), demonstrating sound technical and functional judgement, interpersonal and communications skills.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • MS degree in Sciences and/or Engineering (including sciences such as life sciences, and/or physical, and/or engineering).

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and perform thorough tech-market and commercial assessments in broad range of technologies.
  • Hands-on science/technology licensing or management experience in academic or industrial environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with scientists and industrial researchers.
  • Ability to develop and make coherent and compelling public presentations.
  • Ability to organize and manage a high workload, multiple concurrent projects, and a wide range of technologies.
  • Ability to function as an effective team player.
  • Adept at market assessment and quantitative valuation of technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on written contractual agreement experience with 2 - 3 licensing or contractual-based deals closed in past positions.
  • A doctoral degree ideally with degrees in more than one scientific discipline.
  • Hands-on 'tech transfer', research commercialization, technology licensing or management experience in either academic or industrial environments.
  • Working knowledge of patents and intellectual property.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, communications, and time-management skills.
  • Broad scientific knowledge, education, or experience in multiple technical areas.
  • Experience in tech-market assessment of innovations from scientific research.
  • Working knowledge of patents and intellectual property; experience in technology licensing or contractual agreements (such as research collaborations).

Equipment Utilized
  • Software and programs for routine reporting and presentation work (Excel, PPT), scientific searches, patent literature, as well as Technology Transfer's' specialized Minuet Intellectual Property database.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Office environment.
