Job Description

IRCameras is currently recruiting for the position of Mechanical Engineer. This role requires a balance between broad engineering-related tasks, and customer-engagement, all focused on growing the sales of the IRCameras product portfolio. The Apps/System Engineer serves as the initial contact point for queries from new sales prospects, the reliable technical resource for existing customers, and the key intermediary between engineering, product management, and our customers. Activities addressing customer needs, include system integration, verification and validation,.

IRCameras is a full service provider of high performance, customizable infrared imaging systems and Integrated Dewar Cooler Assemblies (IDCAs). Whether the end system will be used for a scientific, industrial, space, or defense application, IRCameras is positioned to meet the most demanding thermal imaging needs. We offer a wide selection of standard and custom Short Wave Infrared (SWIR), Mid Wave Infrared (MWIR) and Long Wave Infrared (LWIR) cameras, as well as an extensive line of custom packaged IDCAs. We focus on technical excellence, delivered quickly to meet the needs of our customers addressing a range of applications for precision radiometric measurements and observations.

Responsibilities - Apps/System Engineer

  • Dewar Design: Provide leadership and technical content to the design and architecture of our Dewars and IDCAs. Some hands-on design work may be required, but more commonly, the Dewar Engineering lead in Santa Barbara will provide Dewar design input to one of the staff Mechanical Engineers, and oversee their progress to completion. The scope of work could range from simple modification to existing designs (cold shield and cold filter changes), to more custom designs for future roadmap or for specific individual customer needs. Offer team leadership to ensure the completion of technical work. Take ownership and responsibility for product design. Interpret system specifications and reduce to mechanical design requirements. Create conceptual designs, assess risks, conduct design trade studies, and develop cost effective products that meet the program requirements for system packaging. Participate / conduct product design & development meetings, as well as, internal/customer design reviews as required. Coordinate work activities with other groups.
  • Dewar and IDCA Processes: Provide guidance to the overall engineering and operations team on processes, equipment and other technology elements required to efficiently and reliably build our Dewar products. Some hands-on build and debug work may be required, to assist in the resolution of process and equipment issues, and in the execution of training of build personnel. Collaborate with staff members with respect to IDCA fabrication and realization activities, such as; processes, fixtures, equipment selection, and required instructions to perform fabrication tasks. Guide fabrication and testing of hardware. Develop test plans and spearhead the fabrication of prototypes. Conduct or direct sub-system mechanical testing to validate compliance to system requirements. Provide technical direction to supporting personnel to resolve design and related manufacturing problems to ensure producibility of designs.

  • Dewar/IDCA Subsystem Technology Roadmaps: Maintain visibility and awareness of emerging trends and competitive landscape within the broader IR Dewar industry. Support IRC's roadmap process by identifying the most productive direction for IRC's Dewar designs and processes. Assess and communicate the business case and feasibility of new Dewar technologies to ensure profitability.
  • Business Management Support: Support operational and business activities through cost/workload estimates during the quotation cycle, equipment cost/sourcing assistance, and other types of business planning and analysis tasks. Support proposal development and participate in the preparation of technical proposals. Use experience to baseline conceptual designs during the proposal effort.
  • Project/Customer Management: Particularly for customers/contracts with heavy mechanical/Dewar design content, there will be opportunities for direct engagement and management of activities with our customers. Clear communications of requirements, plans, results and action items would be part of these tasks.
  • Augment Overall Mechanical Team: As bandwidth and opportunities permit, there is a possibility to offer support to the overall camera mechanical design effort, and to offer support to the IR test equipment mechanical design team within SBIR. With the ebb and flow of workload between the two companies, and with the periodic surfacing of urgent issues, IRC and SBIR like to take advantage of the opportunity to share critical resources between the two companies.
