About the Job

We invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher to support ongoing research on fungal processes and mineral dissolution in porous media. The projects investigate how filamentous fungi mediate mineral weathering under flowing porous media conditions, as well as more general mechanisms of mineral dissolution in porous media systems, with implications for subsurface biogeochemistry and sustainable critical mineral extraction.

The researcher will conduct microfluidic experiments to visualize and quantify fungal-mineral interactions and mineral dissolution processes at the pore scale under controlled flow and nutrient conditions. The work will involve designing and operating microfluidic porous media devices, cultivating fungal strains, imaging fungal growth and mineral dissolution processes, and analyzing chemical effluent and mineral weathering products. In addition, the postdoctoral researcher may have opportunities to contribute to related projects on groundwater flow and subsurface contaminant transport, depending on interest and project needs.

The postdoctoral researcher will devote 85% effort to research activities, including experimental work, data analysis, and model development. 10% effort will support dissemination of research findings, including publications and conference presentations. The remaining 5% effort will be dedicated to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students participating in the project.

The position is ideal for candidates with experience in geomicrobiology, environmental microbiology, microfluidics, or porous media processes, and an interest in interdisciplinary research at the interface of biology, geochemistry, and fluid flow.

Note: This position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship.

Qualifications

Qualifications:
PhD in Civil & Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Geosciences, or a related field.
Strong background in laboratory experimentation (microfluidics involving microbes, reactive transport, or related).
Strong communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
