Job Summary

A Research Technician position is available in the Afify lab at the Department of Biology. We are looking for individuals with experience in Python to develop a mosquito tracking algorithm. The successful candidate will also assist in routine lab work, but previous lab experience is not required. The initial appointment is for one year, with a possible extension. This is a Hybrid role, with ability to work from home a couple times a week if desired.

This position is grant-funded; employment is contingent upon the continued availability of those funds.

Essential Functions



  • Developing a tracking algorithm for mosquito behavior.
  • Help managing and maintaining mosquito colonies.
  • Help monitor inventory levels, ordering materials and supplies.
  • Managing and performing general laboratory tasks, including preparing common reagents, and ensuring safety and compliance day-to-day and for annual inspections.


Required Qualifications



  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Entomology, or Bioinformatics a related field or the equivalent combination of education and work experience. (Please review the Equivalency Chart for additional information.)
  • Experience working with Python.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Ability to remain motivated and solution-driven.
  • Strong problem solving skills.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience working with tracking methods for insect behavior.
  • Experience with insect husbandry and coding.

Additional Information

This position is classified as Non-Exempt, grade F. Compensation for this grade ranges from $14.10 - $21.15 per hour. Please note that the offered rate for this position typically aligns with the minimum to midrange of this grade, but it can vary based on the successful candidate's qualifications and experience, department budget, and an internal equity review.
