Pay Rate: $ 40.00/hr.
Shift Timing (Day/ Evening/ Night):Day 8 am- 4:30pm

Job Summary:

  • Receives day-to-day guidance and assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer at the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center (CRMHC). Installs, maintains, repairs and monitors for proper operations the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) operational systems, boilers, furnaces, high pressure, gas or oil fired boilers and auxiliaries, stokers, blowers, flow meters, pumps, fans, belts, filters, compressors, generators, turbines, diesel engines, building automation systems, humidifiers, refrigeration (including Chlorofluorocarbon systems), electrical and computerized comfort control systems, ventilating and air handling unit temperature control systems, etc. Reads and understands mechanical blueprints, technical equipment manuals. Cleans, lubricates and greases equipment. Repairs and replaces pumps, replaces defective valves, gaskets or parings, changes filters and removes soot and corrosion from equipment and systems, etc. Operates hand and power tools and heavy powerhouse tools to perform routine repairs and for complete overhaul of systems and equipment. Lifts and moves equipment/machinery up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance. Performs winter/summer changeovers of HVAC machinery and equipment. Opens or closes steam valves and intake dampers to adjust steam temperature and monitors gauges to properly adjust and maintain temperatures and humidity for seasonal heating and cooling of buildings. Directs the work of vendors during the installation or repair of equipment that cannot be completed in-house. Travels in performance of job duties.
  • Makes rounds of buildings' boiler and mechanical at regular intervals. Observes and listens to the performance of machinery and equipment to assess its operation and efficiency and to detect potential mechanical problems. Reads gauges and inspects equipment. Operates computer to adjust, make changes to or implement energy conservation measures to HVAC systems. Records information on equipment logs to monitor fuel consumed, power generated, temperature, pressures, chemical readings, etc., and to note equipment repairs and/or potential problems. Notifies supervisor of concerns and incidents noted during rounds that require immediate attention or that have immediate safety issues. Monitors fire control systems. Periodically performs test on fire control equipment to ensure proper working order.
  • Tests and records of water used for consumption or for generating steam and hydraulic hot water, chilled water systems and adds appropriate chemicals for proper maintenance of systems.
  • Confers with tenant agencies to resolve problems related to building services. Reports complaints and emergency calls to supervisor.
  • Assists other facilities in the installation, maintenance and repair of various mechanical systems to ensure proper functioning of systems and equipment. Observes and listens to the performance of various machineries to detect mechanical problems. Uses power tools and heavy powerhouse equipment and tools to perform repairs and in the maintenance of equipment/machinery. Utilizes agency supplied materials/equipment (e.g., pager, cell phone, etc.) in the performance of duties. In performance of job duties works after business hours, weekends and holidays.
  • Completes all mandatory training for Client (Client) and CRMHC for compliance with all regulations for Mental Health Centers.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of eight years elementary school.
  • Requires four years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high pressure and/or low-pressure stationary boilers.
  • Candidate must have at least two to four years of experience in such areas as legal, pre-legal, statistics, auditing, biology, chemistry, science, medical technology, etc. The User Agency will specify at the time of order what specific areas will be necessary for the temporary staffing employee while on assignment via a job description


Required Ability:

  • Requires possession or ability to obtain a valid certificate as a Universal Technician under U.S.E.P.A. Stationary Engineer license Certificate for the City of Chicago.
  • Requires the ability to perform various tasks such as lifting and moving equipment/machinery up to 50 pounds
  • independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires the ability to utilize agency supplied equipment (i.e., cellphone, pager, etc.).
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Requires an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
  • Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends and holidays.
