Departmental Overview

The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative new college at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The College brings together faculty, researchers, staff, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the
research university for the digital age. Core to the College is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity-and building the capacity to respond to these
challenges.

CDSS was created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform practice and policy in virtually every arena. The College connects the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program, Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Sciences, Department of Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Computational Precision Health, and the Center for Computational Biology.

The Space Planning and System Analyst serves as the primary facilities and events operations lead for all Gateway event spaces, including classrooms, lecture halls, the event center, and meeting rooms, providing end-to-end oversight of space reservations, room configurations, audiovisual readiness, and accessibility planning. Leads and coordinates room reservations for
academic, research, and high-profile public events in the CDSS Gateway building, including lectures, symposiums, conferences, instructional programs, donor and industry engagements, banquets, and VIP briefings. Independently manages small to mid-scale events and provides operational support and on-site decision-making for large, complex, or high-visibility events, coordinating closely with CDSS leadership, campus partners, vendors, security, AV technicians, and facilities teams to ensure seamless execution and compliance with campus policies.

Responsibilities

50% Systems Analysis and Room Scheduling:

Manages Gateway room reservations for academic, research, and college-sponsored events serving the CDSS community, including UC Berkeley students, staff, faculty, and approved external partners. Maintains and supports 25Live, Google Calendar, and other scheduling systems for CDSS instructional and shared-use spaces within the Gateway building, ensuring seamless
coordination across academic departments and programs. Utilize systems to assess how space is being used, find ways to make it more efficient, and share information or reports on classroom needs and the scheduling process. Plan and forecast future room usage for Gateway spaces based on analysis of historical utilization trends, academic calendars, and input from CDSS academic and administrative leadership. Advises departmental schedulers on CDSS and campus scheduling policies, system upgrades, and classroom technology integration to ensure consistent and accessible instructional experiences. Provides analysis and recommendations to support policy decisions, course scheduling models, and cross-departmental coordination within CDSS.

15% Event Support:

Daily review, resolve, and confirm event room usage in the Gateway building in accordance with campus policies, CDSS priorities, and space-use guidelines. Serve as liaison between CDSS event organizers, guest speakers, campus facilities, custodial services, access control, and security staff to ensure smooth execution of events. Coordinates event setup and breakdown for activities held in the Gateway building, including lectures, workshops, classes, conferences, and donor events. This includes moving and arranging furniture, tables, chairs, signage, stanchions, easels, trash/recycling receptacles, and custodial service requests. Train and supervise student assistants or work-study employees supporting Gateway operations, facilities coordination, and event services.

15% Administrative Duties:

Distribute billing documentation and notifications, coordinate payment processing, and work with the CDSS Financial team to ensure timely receipt of payments via checks, wire transfers, or campus journals. Prepare facilities-related internal billing (IOCs) for campus partners and invoices for approved external users of Gateway spaces, as requested by the supervisor.

10% Training and Technical Support:

Develops and delivers training sessions for departmental schedulers, staff, and instructional support personnel on Gateway scheduling systems, access protocols, and facilities policies. Creates user guides, training materials, and online resources to promote knowledge sharing and standardize procedures across CDSS units. Troubleshot issues related to web-based scheduling forms, 25Live, access credentials, and classroom technology in collaboration with campus IT and Facilities Services.

10% Long Range Planning:

Participates in strategic planning for academic terms, especially during periods of enrollment growth, or facility constraints. Supports the development of classroom policy through the Campus Committee on Classroom Policy and Management (CCCPM). Provides data and recommendations for long-range space planning and facilities investments aligned with CDSS's academic goals. | Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to prioritize under pressure.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; adept at liaising with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to maintain data accuracy across multiple systems.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and the ability to quickly learn new software platforms.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

Anticipated hiring range: $30.17/hr - $39.08/hr
UCB salary range: $30.17/hr- $51.92/hr
The salary offer to the final candidate will take into consideration their experience and salary equity with current UC Berkeley employees working in similar roles.
