Position Summary

This faculty position provides instruction in Health Information Management (HIM) across classroom and online formats for undergraduate and graduate students. Responsibilities include course development, student advising, curriculum support, and assisting with CAHIIM accreditation compliance, recruitment, and admissions activities. The role requires active engagement in scholarship, professional development, and service to the department, college, and university, along with participation in professional associations.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate HIM courses in classroom and online formats, including a standard academic-year course load and additional summer teaching as assigned. May also provide guest lectures in areas of expertise.
  • Develop, update, and maintain course content for online, blended, and face-to-face delivery, using effective instructional practices and current HIM standards.
  • Collaborate with the program director and faculty on curriculum development, program planning, assessment activities, and academic administration. Provide guidance and mentoring to adjunct faculty to support instructional quality, course consistency, and alignment with program standards.
  • Assist with maintaining program compliance with CAHIIM accreditation standards, including documentation, reporting, and outcomes assessment.
  • Advise and mentor students regarding academic progress, professional development, and career pathways in health information management.
  • Support student recruitment, admissions-related activities, and outreach efforts that promote the HIM program.
  • Engage in scholarly and professional activities that support continued subject matter expertise in assigned teaching areas. This may include research, publications, presentations, professional practice engagement, or continuing education related to health information management, data analytics, quality, leadership, policy, compliance, or healthcare operations.
  • Maintain active involvement in professional associations and provide service to the department, college, and university through committee work, consulting, workshops, and related faculty service activities.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Master's degree in Health Information Management, Health Informatics, or a closely related field.
    • Teaching experience in HIM or closely related courses (classroom or online) or Professional experience in health information management practice.
    • In-depth knowledge of health information management principles, including health records, data governance, privacy, security, regulatory compliance, and professional practice standards.
    • Demonstrated understanding of healthcare information systems and technologies, including electronic health records (EHRs), health data structures, and systems analysis concepts.
    • Effective teaching and instructional communication skills.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
    • Ability to teach diverse learners in classroom and online environments.
    • Ability to support curriculum initiatives and follow academic policies and procedures.
    • Ability to engage in ongoing professional development.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • RHIA or RHIT credential.
    • Experience teaching in higher education, particularly in online or blended formats.
    • Experience with online course development.
    • Experience participating in accreditation, assessment, or curriculum development activities.
    • Familiarity with health data analytics and research methods used to support decision-making and evaluation in healthcare settings.
    • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in health information management and health informatics, as well as CAHIIM accreditation standards and outcomes assessment processes.
    • Academic advising and student mentoring skills.
    • Scholarly writing and presentation skills.
    • Online instructional design skills
    • Balance teaching, service, and scholarly responsibilities in a faculty role.
    • Represent the program through professional service and community engagement.
    • Contribute to accreditation and program evaluation activities.
