Essential Job Duties
Are you a skilled locksmith who enjoys solving complex challenges, leading a team, and ensuring the safety and security of a large and dynamic environment? The Locksmith Shop Supervisor plays a critical role in protecting university facilities by providing both hands-on technical expertise and strategic leadership for the University Lock Shop.
In this role, you will oversee the integrity and management of the campus-wide master key system, ensuring secure access across a wide range of academic, research, and administrative buildings. You will lead a team of locksmith professionals, manage daily operations, and guide complex hardware and security projects that support the university's safety and operational goals. Your work will help ensure compliance with life safety and fire code requirements while maintaining the reliability and functionality of locking systems across campus.
This position is ideal for an experienced locksmith who enjoys combining technical craftsmanship with leadership, problem-solving, and project management in a collaborative campus environment.

Key Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Direct and lead Lock Shop staff, providing clear organization and daily operational direction. Making final hiring decisions, evaluating performance by developing annual work plans and conducting formal performance appraisals for permanent employees. Promote professional development by identifying training opportunities for staff, both on-campus and through trade associations, to ensure skills remain at university and industry standards.

  • Design and layout complex SFIC master key systems for new construction and major renovations, ensuring logical and secure expansion of the university's lock infrastructure.

  • Maintain system integrity by overseeing the security of the master key system and keeping meticulous records of all key combinations and campus-wide locations.

  • Manage inventory control for all university system keys, ensuring accurate tracking from issuance to return.

  • Consult with clients and university personnel to determine the most effective key systems and door hardware configurations based on specific building needs.

  • Direct technical operations involving the installation, repair, and maintenance of high-security door hardware and locking mechanisms.

  • Enforce safety standards by overseeing the inspection of fire doors in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), NC Building Codes, and Life Safety Codes.

  • Act as a technical advisor for staff regarding Life Safety Codes, providing ongoing training and updates on new regulatory procedures.
  • Provide financial oversight by working within established budgets and following university purchasing guidelines to acquire high-quality materials.

  • Manage shop inventory by ordering shop stock and specialized door hardware to ensure project timelines are met.

  • Execute project cost management, including providing accurate estimates to customers and monitoring project progress to ensure they remain within budget.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public, and follows verbal and written instructions related to work assignments and operational needs.
  • Perform lifting duties up to 30 pounds frequently and 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations

Other Responsibilities
  • Responsible for providing training to locksmiths on current National Fire Protection Association Codes, Life Safety Codes, NC Fire Codes, & NC Building Codes in order to make proper installation of door hardware on campus doors.
Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in the trade(s) areas assigned; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive experience as a locksmith supervisor, preferably in an institutional setting, but not mandatory.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Familiarity with AiM work order systems is a plus, but not required.
  • Membership in the Associated Institutional Locksmith Association/and or recognized industry organization is preferred.
  • Certified Journey Level Certification and/or Fire Door Inspector Certification is advantageous but not mandatory.

Required License or Certification

  • Current locksmith license.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
