Description
Position Summary The Tax Manager is responsible for end-to-end management of U.S. indirect taxes-including sales & use tax, gross receipts, excise (as applicable), property tax, business license taxes, and unclaimed property-ensuring accurate compliance, timely filings, audit readiness, and robust internal controls. This role partners closely with Accounting, Sales, Procurement, Legal, and Operations to optimize tax processes, maintain a defensible taxability matrix, manage nexus, and drive automation. You will lead and develop a high-performing team (2+ direct reports) and serve as the primary point of contact for tax authorities and external advisors. Essential Responsibilities & Expectations
- Own the monthly/quarterly/annual sales & use tax lifecycle: data extraction, reconciliation, return preparation, e filings, payments, and journal entries.
- Oversee business license, property tax, gross receipts, excise (if applicable), environmental fees, and unclaimed property filings and remittances.
- Manage resale/exemption certificate collection, validation, and retention; maintain certificate expiration monitoring.
- Ensure controls over tax determination, return accuracy, approvals, and payment processes.
- Maintain a taxability matrix and product/service mapping; ensure accuracy in tax engine/ERP (AX 2012/D365 and CCH SureTax).
- Lead nexus monitoring (economic and physical), registration, and deregistration activities; assess impacts of business changes to established nexus.
- Serve as primary contact for state/local tax audits, notices, and inquiries; manage information requests, defend positions, and negotiate resolutions.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and proactively implement required updates.
- Drive process standardization and automation across return prep, data validations, reconciliations, and certificate management.
- Own master data and cross-functional change control impacting tax (item masters, customer exemptions, ship-from/ship-to data).Create and maintain desktop procedures, policy documents, and control narratives.
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of 2+ indirect tax professionals; set goals, assign work, review outputs, and support career growth.
- Build strong partnerships with Controller, Accounting, Procurement, Sales Ops, IT, and the ERP team.
- Proficiently use company software systems, including but not limited to Microsoft Dynamics AX, Targit, UltiPro/UKG, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft SharePoint
- Handle special projects and other tasks assigned by management
Qualifications Education Bachelors degree or higher in Accounting is required. Experience
- 5-8+ years of progressive U.S. indirect tax experience, including multi-state sales & use tax
- Hands-on experience with tax engine software and major ERP system strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience managing or supervising staff (2+ direct reports preferred)
- Strong understanding of nexus, taxability rules, exemption certificate management, and audit defense.
- Advanced Excel skills, strong reconciliation ability, and documentation discipline
