Summary: Under the leadership of the physician-led medical team, the APP will provide autonomous medical care to our adult Otolaryngology patient population; including performing history and physical exams; collecting and documenting data, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering diagnostic studies, providing pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic management, coordinating patient care, and making appropriate surgical referrals. The APP must be comfortable working in an autonomous environment and comfortable knowing when to seek advice from other members of the medical team. The APP will be provided with formal training, if needed, and have readily available access to physician and non-physician back-up when needed. Schedule: Maintain autonomous outpatient clinic, Monday to Friday in the Duke Otolaryngology Clinic of Mebane (coverage for other clinic sites as needed). There is no call requirement. There are no OR or inpatient responsibilities. The provider will have weekly administrative time following completion of training. Work Performed: Provide timely patient access for new and established patient visits, including pre-scheduled appointments, post-operative visits, urgent and non-urgent add-ons, virtual visits, and appointments made at the request of another provider to provide continuity of care. Take patient histories, conduct physical examinations, and record the data in the patient's record; write progress notes. Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assist in diagnosing medical and surgical conditions including (but not limited to): nasal endoscopy, nasolaryngoscopy, control of nasal bleeding, superficial biopsies of the ear, nose, throat and neck, microscopic ear examination, microscopic ear debridement, incision and drainage of abscesses, placement of pressure equalization tubes, suture removal, removal of foreign bodies in the ear, nose and throat, fine needle aspirations, and wound management. Order laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; explain the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient. Interpret diagnostic test results including (but not limited to): Audiograms, MRI, CT, Ultrasound, culture results, and pathology results. Prescribe necessary treatment (pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic) and services for quality patient care. Make appropriate medical referrals when indicated. Utilize our electronic medical record system to: review the chart, write clinic notes, perform video visits, communicate with patients including answering questions and concerns, provide test results, renew prescriptions, communicate with staff, and work with insurers for prior authorization. Coordinate patient care by communicating with medical providers from both within and outside our institution. Participate in medical education including (but not limited to): teaching physician assistant and nurse practitioner students, post-graduate APP interns, and other learners in the practice of Otolaryngology medicine. Participate in basic science and clinical research projects conducted by our research team. Maintain all documentation and certification required by law to practice medicine as a Physician Assistant in the state of North Carolina. Participate in clinic meetings, huddles, safety protocols and drills. Other factors considered for satisfactory performance:
