ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Asset Accountant is responsible for managing the organization's fixed asset accounting processes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely reporting. This role oversees the full asset lifecycle-including acquisition, capitalization, depreciation, transfer, and disposal. The Asset Accountant will supervise two direct reports, providing direction, training, workload management, and performance feedback to support departmental goals.

The typical schedule is Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM or 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)



  1. Maintain and reconcile the fixed asset subledger and general ledger accounts.
  2. Ensure accurate capitalization of assets in accordance with company policy and GAAP.
  3. Record depreciation, amortization, adjustments, and disposals.
  4. Monitor construction work in progress (CWIP) activity and ensure timely project closeouts.
  5. Review and validate asset coding, useful life assignments, and depreciation methods.
  6. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual fixed asset schedules and reports.
  7. Support internal and external audits by providing documentation and reconciliations.
  8. Assist with budgeting and forecasting related to capital expenditures and depreciation.
  9. Prepare and file related returns and reports, including fuel/mileage filings, and license and title filings.
  10. Perform administrative oversight of and recordkeeping for preventive maintenance, Voyager fleet cards, tool reimbursements, DOT and other inspections.
  11. Process and maintain company equipment pool leases.
  12. Chart and maintain preventative maintenance schedules.
  13. Calculate and record equipment rates/ attachment true ups.
  14. Compiles, records, and analyzes financial information for all company equipment and equipment-related activities, including original miles/hours; weekly equipment hours; Unit numbers and transfers; Unit titling and licensing; Meter true ups; shop/dummy allocations; business unit exception, and offsite mechanic time.
  15. Partner with procurement, operations, and project teams to ensure data integrity.
  16. Conduct performance evaluations and support goal setting.
  17. Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and asset documentation prepared by the team.
  18. Manage workflow, set priorities, and ensure deadlines are met.
  19. Support capital project tracking and reporting.
  20. Ensure DOT, MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
  21. Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)



  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Strong organizational skills.
  3. Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  4. Able to work independently and under time constraints.
  5. Strong knowledge of GAAP and fixed asset accounting principles.
  6. Experience with ERP and fixed asset modules
  7. Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  8. Ability to lead, mentor, and develop staff


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)



  1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  2. Basic knowledge of GAAP.


PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (preferred requirements i.e. certifications, software use, etc.)



  1. Prior supervisory or teamlead experience desirable.
  2. 3-5+ years of accounting experience; fixed asset accounting strongly preferred.
