Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development. The Division of Student Affairs aids, directs and informs students about services and programs that will expand students' educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom/off campus aspects of student life at NCCU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services; student leadership; residential life; student activities; student conduct; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and spiritual development and dialogue.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Volunteer/Tutor Coordinator of the Academic Opportunities for Student Success Activity is a crucial resource for the development of student success on campus. The Volunteer/Tutor Coordinator shares the responsibilities for the daily operation of the of the Academic Opportunities for Student Success Activity, including, but not limited to, working with various registered student organizations while providing leadership, mentoring, advising, and programming for students. This individual offers support and guidance to ensure academic and social success while promoting dialogue on matters related to college student development. The Volunteer/Tutor Coordinator is supervised by the Activity Coordinator of the Academic Opportunities for Student Success Activity and will assist in carrying out its long-term goals.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
*Excellent counseling, relationship building, and teamwork skills
*Knowledge of student development and higher education philosophies and theories, specifically those pertaining to student success.
*Excellent communication and organizational skills
*Ability to work in fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
*Demonstrated superior customer service skills for both internal and external audiences
*Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and knowledge of various social networking resources
Minimum Education/Experience
Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Organizational Leadership, or other related fields.

Two (2) to five (5) years of experience working at the professional level with college students in a college setting
Marketing skills with excellent public speaking/presentation skills
Research training
Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

Primary Responsibilities and Duties


Function Coordination - Work
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Coordinate with student services and other units on campus, counseling, career planning, and other support services which will enhance students' academic performance. Manages the community engagement component of the program through collaborative work with other departments at the institution. Collaborates with other campus offices including, but not limited to, Residential Life, University College, Athletics, Student Activities, Career Services, Academic and Community Service Learning Program, Student Health and Counseling, First-Year Experience, Spiritual Development and Dialogue, and various academic units. Builds partnerships with the local community to enhance the appreciation of college students.


Function Communication
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Maintains the volunteer and tutorial programs which complement and supplement the course work and campus experiences of college students. Develops relationships with Volunteer site directors and program staff. Schedules student tutoring times to ensure that the center operates at times convenient to students, including evening and weekends. Recruits, hires, and supervises the volunteers and tutors. Coordinates academic support activities for Academic Opportunities for Student Success participants using services available in the Academic Support Center, the University College, academic departments, and the Division of Student Affairs.


Function Knowledge - Professional
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Develops an individualized instructional program for each student through collaboration with Academic Opportunities for Student Success Activity Coordinators, University College Advisors, and faculty in the academic departments. The individualized instructional program includes stated learning outcomes and recommended learning strategies for accomplishing the stated outcomes. Works in establishing programs and services to promote the success of college students, including mentoring, leadership development, academic skills enhancement, and individual tutoring services.


Function Customer Service/Communication
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
Refers students to other resources available on campus, such as counseling, career planning, student organizations, and the Academic Advising Center. Conducts bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with all males student in the program with course performance issues. Monitors each student's progress toward accomplishing the learning outcomes. Submits regular reports on the progression of the Academic Opportunities for Student Success and its programs. Works with faculty, graduate student assistants, and undergraduate tutors to provide learning activities to assist students in accomplishing their learning objectives. Develops innovative approaches for delivering instructional programs to students needing assistance. Maintains meticulous records of student interactions using GradesFirst software. Assists students with improving their study skills, managing their time more effectively, using effective test-taking skills, and taking responsibility for their academic progress. Provides thorough, accurate, and consistent records of students' visits, calls, emails, and work in courses and tutorial services and carrying out other duties as assigned by the Activity Coordinator. Works during the hours the office is open, and frequently works multiple evenings and weekends per week, as needed. Facilitates student research development, which includes selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating student projects in collaboration with faculty.
