DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Research & Innovation (R&I) is a resource for UC researchers and administrators in research policy, funding for systemwide programs, and the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem. We work to build UC-wide partnerships, help shape effective policies and provide a strong voice nationally for research and innovation on behalf of UC.

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a TEMPORARY position within our Temporary Office of the President Staffing (TOPS) program.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs analyses across intellectual property / technology licensing / transfer professional concepts.

  • Provides direct assistance to the professional staff, campus tech transfer offices, general counsel and outside counsel at a paralegal level in the area of patent prosecution.

  • Completes and verifies US domestic patent filings, foreign patent application filings, plant patent filing, and plant variety protection. Requires basic knowledge of U.S. patent law, rules, and prosecution practice and familiarity with US and foreign patent prosecution, filings and processes.

  • Facilitates administration of federal and state laws regarding research related to IP protection. Works with locations and outside patent attorneys to file patent applications.

  • Reviews input of disclosure and patent prosecution records in the systemwide IP database, including records of actions taken with respect to UC contractual obligations to the government.

  • Designs and develops high-level database reports requested by professional staff and management.

  • Prepares monthly activity reports including the disclosure and authorization reports. Assists Supervisor in the preparation of legal documents (e.g., attestations for the countries, powers of attorney, assignment of rights) for execution and, as necessary, directly executes routine letters.

  • Reviews the status of licensed cases and make recommendations to management as to paying annuities and fees due on patent applications and patents, as needed, consistent with prosecution and maintenance obligations to licensees.

  • Coordinates with ITE accounting department to ensure that invoice payments are paid appropriately

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Develops knowledge of and application of standard principles, theories and concepts such as laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to the protection and management of intellectual property, university technology transfer, and general scientific and / or technical skills in subject matter area.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate with leadership, locations, and peers.

  • Demonstrated analytical / problem-solving skills.

  • Basic knowledge of organization-specific computer applications.

  • Basic knowledge of organization processes, protocols, research, and procedures.

  • Proficiency in project and task management.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, working 2 - 3 days per week. The person hired will be required to reside within California and will be required to report to work onsite at UC's Office of the President (UCOP) located in Oakland, CA.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The University of California, Office of the President, is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the salary grade for a position. The full salary range shows the growth potential for this position.

PayScale/ budgeted hourly range: $32.90/hour - $45.16/hour. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
