The Position

Join an industry-leading water supply and wastewater utility as a pavement saw-cutter. East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) offers an excellent work environment with state-of-the-art construction projects and challenging assignments. Saw-cutters perform asphalt and concrete saw cutting for pipeline replacement crews.

Typical duties include loading, unloading, transporting and operating up to 36" asphalt/concrete flat saws up to 1,800 lbs; proper containment, collection and disposal of saw cutting slurry; maintain accurate saw cutting production records; and ensure that street barricades, safety cones, and other safety devices are properly placed and removed. A significant portion of anticipated work will require the immediate use of a concrete/asphalt flat saw.

*Demonstrate skill and proficiency in safely and efficiently securing worksites, preparing the concrete/asphalt flat saw for use, and the operation of the concrete/asphalt flat saw.

*Safely and effectively load, unload, secure and transport various materials and equipment.

*Safely and efficiently direct the operation of equipment such as concrete saws, and light trucks with trailers.

*Work cooperatively as a crew member and interact effectively with the public and other EBMUD staff.

The salary range is $8,231 per month increasing to $8,643, $9,075 and $9,529 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements

1.Completion of the eighth grade, or its equivalent; AND

2.One year of experience as a laborer on a concrete/asphalt saw cutting crew.

3.Must possess a valid, unrestricted California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.

4.Must be willing to work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions and in proximity to traffic, poison oak, and insects.

5.Must be physically capable of operating a variety of hand and power tools, including a pavement breaker weighing approximately 90 pounds and capable of sustained shoveling of dirt, gravel or asphalt.

6.Must be willing to work overtime on an extended shift as needed.

The Selection Process

1.Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2026. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.

2.Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.

3.All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates receiving a passing score to be invited to a performance test tentatively scheduled for mid-May.

4.Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.

5.The probation period for this position is 6 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.

6.All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
